From a carrier and drayage provider perspective, this work is high-frequency and low-margin but essential to the modal chain; efficiency gains here reduce costs for the entire supply chain.
How Inbound Drayage Differs From Other Yard Moves
Inbound drayage is distinct from long-haul trucking and terminal yard operations. It covers the short-haul leg from port or ramp gate to consignee, while long-haul involves over‑the‑road linehaul between cities. Terminal moves inside the port or rail yard are handled by terminal operators and are separate from the drayage carrier’s responsibility.
- Terminal Operations: Managed by the port/rail operator and include container stacking, gate processing, and internal chassis pooling.
- Linehaul: Over‑the‑road transport across regions, usually handled by asset-based carriers with longer lead times.

If the drayage truck arrives late due to terminal congestion and misses the appointment, the 3PL may need to reschedule labor and pay overtime to unload the container at a later slot — and the consignee may incur terminal detention charges while the box remains at the terminal.
Tips For Managing Inbound Drayage Efficiently
