  • Volume Justifies Full Trailer: If weekly or daily volume fills a truck, FTL will lower per-unit freight cost and reduce handling complexity.
  • Unitization Is Standard: If goods ship palletized with uniform patterns and labeling, FTL speeds put-away and reduces errors.
  • Service Level Needs: When you need predictable single-source delivery windows and minimal cross-dock handling, FTL is preferable.


When LTL Makes Sense


Consider LTL when:

  • Low Volume: Shipments do not fill a truck on a regular basis and frequent smaller shipments keep working inventory lean.
  • Multiple Suppliers: If sourcing from many suppliers who can’t consolidate, LTL reduces the need for your warehouse to consolidate inbound loads.
  • Cashflow Or Space Constraints: Smaller, more frequent deliveries can reduce storage needs and capital tied in inventory.


Risks And Mitigations


Both modes have inherent risks; manage them proactively:

  • Damage Risk: LTL sees more handling events, increasing damage likelihood—require clear labeling and pallet standards to mitigate this.
