Integration Onboarding Checklist: Steps To Prepare An Integration For Production
Integration Onboarding
Definition
The process of gathering requirements, configuring connections, mapping data, testing workflows, and preparing an integration for production use.
Overview
Integration Onboarding The process of gathering requirements, configuring connections, mapping data, testing workflows, and preparing an integration for production use.
Turning an integration from an idea into reliable production traffic requires a repeatable checklist. This article lays out concrete tasks teams should complete at each phase so stakeholders—product managers, integration engineers, warehouse leads, and carrier operations—have a shared definition of done.
Preliminary Discovery Checklist
Start by reducing ambiguity. Each of the following items should be documented and agreed:
- Business Events: List events (orders, cancellations, shipments, inventory updates) and desired outcomes.
- Message Types & Samples: Collect real sample payloads and identify required vs optional fields.
- SLA Targets: Define delivery windows, retry strategies, and acceptable latency.
- Security & Compliance: Note authentication methods, PII handling, and any regulatory requirements (e.g., customs data).
Connection And Transport Setup
Configure endpoints and prove connectivity before mapping data.
- Endpoint Provisioning: Provide sandbox endpoints and credentials to the partner.
- Authentication: Exchange keys/certificates or configure OAuth flows and verify certificate chains.
- Network Tests: Run connectivity checks, traceroutes, and payload round-trip tests to measure latency.
Data Mapping And Transformation Checklist
Field-level clarity prevents the most common runtime errors.
- Canonical Schema: Define the internal canonical model for orders, shipments, inventory.
- Field Mapping Table: Map each external field to internal fields, include data types, units, and defaulting rules.
- Lookup Tables: Provide SKU mappings, country codes, and carrier codes; handle unit conversions explicitly.
- Edge Cases: Document handling for partial shipments, canceled lines, or split pallet scenarios.
Testing And Validation Steps
Robust testing reduces surprises at go-live. Follow a staged approach:
- Unit Tests: Validate individual mappings and transformation logic.
- Integration Tests: Send full payloads through the integration path and confirm downstream systems react correctly.
- Failure Modes: Simulate invalid payloads, network failures, and duplicate messages.
- User Acceptance: Have the partner and internal business users approve expected behavior with real-like transactions.
Operational Readiness And Go‑Live
Before flipping a switch, make sure operations can support the integration.
- Monitoring: Configure logs, dashboards, and alert thresholds for message failures and SLA breaches.
- Runbooks: Publish procedures for common issues and escalation paths.
- Rollback Plan: Define how to pause or revert an integration and how to handle messages processed during a rollback window.
- Cutover Window: Schedule a monitored, low-volume go-live with a pre-agreed backout time.
Post‑Go‑Live Validation
Monitor closely during the initial period and validate against KPIs:
- Data Integrity: Reconcile order counts, inventories, and shipment records over the first 24–72 hours.
- Error Trends: Track error type and frequency and implement fixes in a tracked sprint.
- Performance: Ensure message latency meets SLA and that back-pressure does not occur during peak loads.
In short, the Integration Onboarding checklist converts high-level requirements into executable tasks: provision endpoints, map data, validate flows, and ensure operations are prepared to monitor and support the connection. Applying this checklist consistently shortens onboarding time and reduces production incidents.
