Managers often conflate status and accuracy. Status is a business-state label (can we promise this unit?), accuracy is a data-quality metric (do we actually have this unit?). Both are essential: accurate counts are a prerequisite for reliable status flags, and correct statuses make accurate counts actionable. Treating them separately clarifies operational responsibilities and system design.
How Each Concept Is Used Operationally
Inventory accuracy drives trust in transactional systems. Cycle counting, barcode scanning, and reconciliations increase accuracy. Inventory status drives behavior—picking, replenishment, QA routing, or blocking. A warehouse with 99% accuracy but poor status discipline still risks oversells; a site with perfect statuses but inaccurate counts will fulfill the wrong orders.

Watching these in dashboards shows whether process changes reduced exceptions or exposed systemic issues.

Scenario 1: A holiday seller sees many "out of stock" items on the storefront while the warehouse physically has units because the WMS flagged a received lot as "Inspection Required." The fix is a faster inspection-to-sellable workflow and temporary availability rules for expedited channels.
Scenario 2: A retailer reports missing inventory after a busy season. Investigation shows frequent manual overrides to move stock to "Sellable" without verifying counts. The corrective action is stricter override permissions and enforced cycle counts for high-value SKUs.
