Keep Dry

Definition

A handling instruction indicating that the package should be protected from rain, water, and excessive moisture.

Overview

Keep Dry A handling instruction indicating that the package should be protected from rain, water, and excessive moisture. Deciding between using a labeling instruction and investing in waterproof packaging depends on product value, transport exposure, cost tolerance, and the risk tolerance of the shipper and receiver.

Labels and construction both protect goods, but they operate at different points. A Keep Dry label directs behavior; waterproof packaging reduces the probability that behavior failures result in damage. Often the best approach combines both.

When A Label Alone Is Sufficient

Use only the label when the shipment will move predominantly through covered environments and the product is moderately tolerant of brief splashes. Examples include:

  • Short-Distance, Inside Transfers: Shipments moving between indoor facilities or inside vans with cover.
  • Low-Value, Moisture-Tolerant Goods: Items that can withstand minor exposure without customer-impact.
  • Quick Turnaround: Same-day or next-day deliveries where prolonged exposure is unlikely.

When Waterproof Packaging Is Necessary

Invest in waterproof materials when transit exposes goods to rain, condensation, or sea air, or when the contents are highly moisture-sensitive.

  • Long-Distance Or Multimodal Shipments: Ocean or rail legs raise risk of condensation and prolonged exposure.
  • High-Value Or Critical Goods: Electronics, precision instruments, and medical supplies justify extra packaging cost.
  • Open Packaging: Items on pallets, crates, or with venting need physical barriers like pallet covers.

Waterproof Packaging Options

  • Water-Resistant Corrugate: Treated cardboard or waxed liners provide modest resistance and are cost-effective.
  • Polyethylene Liners: Internal plastic liners or bags that seal the product from moisture.
  • Stretch Film And Shrink Wrap: Used on pallets to protect against drizzle and minor splashes; not fully sealed unless combined with top covers.
  • Pallet Covers And Tarps: Heavy-duty covers or tarps for outdoor staging and intermodal transport.

Cost-Benefit Framework

Run a simple comparison: estimate the incremental packaging cost per unit, the expected reduction in claims percentage, and the average claim cost avoided. If packaging cost is lower than expected claims saved, upgrade packaging.

Combining Labels And Packaging For Maximum Protection

A combined strategy is common in practice: waterproof the innermost barrier (liner, desiccant), use water-resistant outer packaging, and apply Keep Dry labels to influence human handling.

  • Layered Defense: Inner sealing prevents product wetting, outer coverings protect during handling, and labels guide human behavior.
  • System Flags: Mark the handling requirement in the WMS and shipping documents; carriers can schedule covered pickup equipment.
  • Inspection Protocols: On receipt, check seals and label condition; log moisture indicators or evidence of exposure.

Operational Examples

A 3PL shipping printed materials to bookstores used waxed inner liners plus Keep Dry labels. Despite costs rising by 2% per carton, return rates for water damage fell from 6% to 0.5%—a net savings after accounting for returns processing and customer service costs.

Environmental And Sustainability Considerations

Waterproofing often uses plastics. Balance performance with sustainability by selecting recyclable liners, minimizing excess materials, and considering reusable pallet covers for repeat shipments.

In short, the Keep Dry instruction is a valuable, low-cost control but does not replace waterproof packaging when exposure risk or product sensitivity is high. Evaluate the route, product risk, and cost impact; where practical, combine a clear handling instruction with at least one physical moisture barrier for reliable protection.
