Keep Off Floor

Definition

A handling instruction requiring the package to be kept off floor during storage and transportation.

Overview

Keep Off Floor A handling instruction requiring the package to be kept off floor during storage and transportation. It is one of several short handling directives that appear on labels and documentation; understanding how it differs from and overlaps with other instructions is essential for correct handling.

Logistics labels often contain multiple handling notes: "Keep Off Floor," "Do Not Stack," "Keep Dry," or "This Side Up." These are not interchangeable. Mixing up instructions can produce damage even when individual directives are followed. This article compares common instructions and gives rules for combined handling requirements.

Keep Off Floor vs Do Not Stack

These two are related but distinct:

  • Keep Off Floor: Requires elevation above the ground (pallet, shelf, or rack). It is primarily about floor-level hazards — moisture, pests, cleaning, and condensation.
  • Do Not Stack: Prohibits placing additional cartons or pallets on top of the specified unit. It protects shape-sensitive or fragile goods from vertical pressure.

Both instructions may apply simultaneously: a fragile product that must be kept off the floor and mustn't be stacked requires dedicated pallet positions or shelving spaces that prevent both floor contact and vertical loads.

Keep Off Floor vs Keep Dry/Keep Upright

Comparisons with other common instructions:

  • Keep Dry: Focuses on moisture exclusion during storage and transport. Elevating items can help keep them dry by avoiding flood or mop contact, but separate moisture control (covers, shrink-wrap, sealed containers) may still be necessary.
  • This Side Up / Handle With Care: Orients and handling sensitivity notes that do not necessarily affect floor placement, though improper orientation on the floor may increase contamination risk.

How To Specify When Multiple Instructions Apply

Best practice is to provide measurable parameters rather than ambiguous phrases. Examples:

  • Measure: "Keep Off Floor — Elevate 6 inches on pallet or rack."
  • Combine: "Keep Off Floor; Do Not Stack; Keep Dry" with separate lines explaining acceptable supports and maximum ambient humidity if relevant.

Impact On Packaging And Unitization

Design packaging to support the handling instructions: ensure baseboards, pallets, or slip sheets are compatible with automated pallet jacks and forklifts; design cartons so they can be stacked if stacking is allowed; use moisture-barrier films when "Keep Dry" is specified. Proper packaging reduces the need for special accommodations during storage and transport.

Implications For Export And Transportation

During export or LTL moves, carriers may stage freight on container or trailer floors temporarily. If "Keep Off Floor" is specified, the shipper or carrier must provide pallet supports, dunnage, or raise the freight to avoid trailer-floor contact. For ocean containers, consider palletized stowage or raised dunnage to mitigate condensation and port water spray.

Labeling And Electronic Communication

Clarity in labeling and electronic communications prevents misinterpretation:

  • Label Design: Use clear pictograms plus text and include specific elevation figures where relevant.
  • EDI/ASN Fields: Populate WMS with handling flags so automated systems route tasks appropriately.

Practical Checklist

  • Confirm Instructions: Check packing slip and carton labels at receipt for any handling notes.
  • Define Supports: Use pallets, skids, racks, or dunnage sized to your facility and the product.
  • Document Exceptions: If you must place goods on the floor temporarily, photograph, log, and notify the responsible party.

In short, the Keep Off Floor instruction protects goods from floor-level hazards and serves a distinct purpose from "Do Not Stack" and other handling notes. Precise labeling, packaging, and SOPs ensure that multiple instructions are respected together without operational confusion.
