Kitting Accuracy measures how closely assembled kits or boxes match the required bill of materials and build instructions. While related to picking accuracy, kitting accuracy covers the end-to-end assembly of a kit—ensuring the right SKUs, counts, and inserts are combined into the final kit container according to specifications.
Confusing kitting accuracy with pick accuracy is common because both involve selecting items from inventory. The distinction matters operationally: pick accuracy measures whether individual picks from shelf locations are correct, while kitting accuracy evaluates the assembled kit as a product. You can have high pick accuracy but poor kitting accuracy if downstream steps (e.g., incorrect placement, missing inserts, miscounts during packing) introduce errors.

When diagnosing quality problems, teams should separate pick-level faults from kit-level assembly faults. Remedies differ: pick faults often require slotting changes, barcode quality fixes, or retraining; kit faults demand changes to kitting station design, clearer build instructions, or additional verification steps at assembly.

A fulfillment center reports a 99.8% pick accuracy rate but a 98.5% kit-level accuracy. Root-cause analysis shows pickers correctly scanned items, but packers missed including warranty cards in 150 of 10,000 kits. The solution involved adding a mandatory scan-to-verify step for the warranty card at the kitting station rather than retraining pickers.
How To Align Both Metrics
- End-To-End WMS Flows: Use workflows that tie pick transactions to specific kit IDs so every pick is tracked to a kit record.
- Scan-To-Verify At Assembly: Require scans of each item as it is placed into the kit and scans of any inserts or documents.
- Staging Controls: Use dedicated staging lanes and physical separators to prevent mix-ups between concurrent kits.
- Dual Sampling: Audit picks and perform kit audits to capture errors at both stages.
In short, the Kitting Accuracy metric differs from pick accuracy by evaluating completed kits against their BOMs and build instructions.
