If a readable barcode is impossible on a single item, label inner packs or inner cartons instead and rely on those scans at pick and pack points.

Implement a scannability checklist before deploying new label designs: test on each scanner model, at typical pick distances and angles; test after exposure to handling, moisture, and packing-line tape; validate with both handheld and fixed-mount scanners. Use periodic automated scan audits to detect fading or adhesive failure over time. Track read rates and set thresholds that trigger a label reprint or material change.


Labeling For Expiration And Regulatory Needs


Where expiration dating or batch traceability is required, always include a clearly readable lot/expiry field on the label. Consider using both human-readable date formats and machine-readable encoded fields (GS1-128 with AI for expiry) so scanning can enforce first-expire-first-out (FEFO) picks in the WMS.
