Labeling, GTINs, And Compliance For Rainbow Packs (U.S.)
Rainbow Pack
Definition
A mixed assortment pack containing multiple colors, flavors, varieties, or SKUs arranged within one case or sellable pack.
Overview
Rainbow Pack A mixed assortment pack containing multiple colors, flavors, varieties, or SKUs arranged within one case or sellable pack. Proper labeling, product identification (GTINs), and regulatory compliance are essential when packing multiple variants into one sellable unit in the United States.
Regulatory and retail compliance for rainbow packs spans product identification (barcodes/GTINs), ingredient and safety labeling (for food and regulated goods), and accurate claims on the pack itself. Failure to disclose constituent items or to link pack GTINs to component SKUs can increase the risk of noncompliance, complicate recalls, and create chargebacks from retailers.
GTINs And Barcode Assignment
Decide whether to assign a unique GTIN to the rainbow pack or use the GTIN of a master case. Industry best practice is to assign a unique GTIN to any sellable unit that differs materially from an existing SKU configuration. A unique pack GTIN lets retailers and supply-chain partners track the assorted pack as a distinct trade item, while internal systems also maintain links to the component SKU GTINs for traceability.
- Pack GTIN: Use when the mix will be sold as a discrete product with its own barcode at shelf or online.
- Component GTINs: Document and link each contained SKU GTIN to the pack in proprietary systems and on the case label to support inventory decomposition and recalls.
Label Content And Legal Requirements
For consumer-packaged goods—especially foods, cosmetics, and drugs—labels must include required disclosures for each component where applicable. This includes ingredient lists, allergen declarations, nutrition facts (food), country-of-origin information (when required), and any statutory warnings. The safest approach is to include consolidated ingredient/allergen information for all contained variants on the pack or to include clear instructions directing consumers to variant-specific labeling if not feasible.
Retailer Requirements And EDI/ASN Mapping
Major retailers and e-commerce platforms frequently require Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Advance Ship Notice (ASN) details that map the pack GTIN to component SKUs and quantities. Failure to supply correct ASN data can lead to receiving delays or chargebacks. Coordinate with retail trading partners early; confirm whether they want the pack shipped as a single sellable unit or require components listed separately in the ASN.
Recall And Traceability Planning
Rainbow packs complicate product recalls because a contaminated component could be distributed across multiple pack configurations. Maintain traceability at the lot level for both pack GTINs and component SKUs. Ensure case labels include lot codes, production dates, and clear mappings to underlying SKU lot identifiers to enable rapid and surgical recalls if needed.
Practical Labeling Checklist
- Pack-Level GTIN: Assign if the rainbow pack is a distinct sellable item; encode in a scannable barcode on the case.
- Component Disclosure: List constituent SKUs, flavors, or colors on the case and include allergen ingredient statements where applicable.
- Lot And Date Codes: Include clear lot/expiration data for traceability across components.
- Retailer ASN Mapping: Confirm EDI/ASN requirements with retail partners and supply the mapped component quantities.
Software And System Requirements
Ensure your ERP/WMS can support multi-level product hierarchies: pack-level GTINs linked to component SKUs and their lot attributes. Many modern systems allow you to record the pack as a distinct item while automatically decrementing component inventory when the pack is broken for fulfillment. Validate these processes with test shipments before full-scale distribution to avoid reconciliation issues.
Industry Guidance And Standards
Follow GS1 standards for GTIN assignment and barcode data structure to ensure global interoperability. For food and regulated products, follow FDA and USDA labeling rules. Engage with retail trading partners early to align on ASN requirements and to prevent downstream chargebacks and compliance disputes.
In short, the Rainbow Pack must be handled as both a sellable unit and as a composite of individual SKUs: assign appropriate GTINs, provide complete labeling and ingredient/allergen disclosures, and map pack-to-component relationships in your WMS and EDI flows to preserve traceability, regulatory compliance, and retailer acceptance.
