Liftgate Service

Definition

A freight service using a truck-mounted liftgate when a shipping or receiving location lacks a suitable loading dock.

Overview

Liftgate Service is a freight service using a truck-mounted liftgate when a shipping or receiving location lacks a suitable loading dock.

Carriers classify deliveries in several ways that can overlap: liftgate service (equipment-based), residential delivery (location-based), and inside delivery or white-glove services (scope-based). Choosing the correct service on the bill of lading prevents delays, avoids surprise charges, and ensures the driver brings the proper equipment and manpower.

Key Differences Between Liftgate And Residential Delivery

  • Definition: Liftgate is an equipment add-on enabling ground-to-trailer transfer; residential delivery is an accessorial applied because the destination is a private residence or non-commercial address.
  • Driver expectations: Residential deliveries often require curbside placement and may have restricted parking, while liftgate requires space for the lift platform to operate safely.
  • Typical fees: Carriers usually charge separately for liftgate and residential accessorials; combined charges are common for home deliveries.

When You Need Both Services

Many home deliveries need both residential and liftgate services — for example, a pallet arriving at a suburban house that has no dock will require a lift and is also considered residential. Booking both in advance helps carriers allocate trucks with lifts and estimate door-to-door time accurately.

When Liftgate Alone Is Sufficient

Liftgate alone may suffice for commercial locations without docks (small retailers, storefronts) where the delivery address is classified as a business. If the location is commercial and the receiver can accept curbside drops during business hours, only the liftgate accessorial is typically needed.

When Residential Delivery Alone Is Sufficient

For small parcels or lightweight items that can be carried by hand to a doorstep, residential delivery may be all that’s required. In those cases the carrier won’t need a lift: parcel couriers manage these moves as part of standard residential service.

Operational Considerations For Receivers

  • Ground conditions: Uneven, muddy, or sloped ground can make lift operations unsafe — disclose conditions when booking.
  • Access and clearance: Note gate codes, tight turns, low overheads, and parking restrictions so the carrier can choose appropriate equipment.
  • Personnel availability: Indicate whether someone will be available to help move freight off the lift; this can reduce time-based charges.

Cost Comparison And Planning

Because residential and liftgate fees are often additive, compare total landed cost against alternatives: smaller parcel carriers for lighter items, or using a local carrier with inside-delivery options. For recurring deliveries to the same location consider negotiating bundled accessorials or scheduled deliveries to reduce per-shipment costs.

Practical Example

A furniture retailer ships a couch to a customer’s home. The shipment is heavy and needs a lift; the address is residential. The shipper books both liftgate and residential delivery. The carrier arrives with a lift-equipped truck, lowers the unit to the curb, and the delivery team carries the item inside for an additional inside-delivery fee already agreed upon. Had the shipper only booked a residential delivery, the carrier might arrive without a lift and have to reschedule.

Checklist For Choosing The Right Service

  • Is there a dock or forklift? If no, consider liftgate.
  • Is the address a residence? If yes, include residential delivery and verify parking and stair access.
  • Do you need inside placement? If yes, book inside delivery/white-glove rather than assuming the driver will carry items inside.
  • Have you noted site constraints? Mention clearances, surface type, and contact details on the BOL or shipment booking.

In short, the Liftgate Service is an equipment-focused solution that often pairs with residential delivery when homes lack loading docks. Booking the correct combination of services, documenting site conditions, and communicating expectations with the carrier prevent costly delays and ensure safe, predictable deliveries.
