Liquidation Recovery Rate

Definition

The percentage of an inventory item's original cost, retail value, or another benchmark recovered through liquidation.

Overview

Liquidation Recovery Rate is the percentage of an inventory item's original cost, retail value, or another benchmark recovered through liquidation. It answers a different question than a markdown percentage: recovery measures realized cash versus a baseline, whereas markdown measures the reduction in selling price from retail.

The two metrics are often reported together but serve different functions in retail decision-making. Understanding their differences prevents misinterpretation when evaluating pricing, promotions, and disposition outcomes.

What Markdown Percentage Measures

Markdown percentage is a merchandising metric showing how much a product's selling price was reduced from its original retail. For example, a $50 item marked to $35 is a 30% markdown from retail. Markdowns are prospective or transactional — they indicate price movement — not the cash actually realized after sale or liquidation.

How The Two Metrics Interact

Markdowns feed into liquidation recovery but don't map one-to-one. A heavy markdown managed through an outlet or promotion may still sell for cash close to the reduced price, producing a predictable impact on recovery. Liquidation, however, often happens in bulk and with additional fees, so recovery may be much lower than the markdown would imply.

Conversion Example

Take a SKU with original retail $100 and cost $40. If it is markdowned to $60 (40% of retail), but ultimately liquidates for $10 per unit through a pallet sale, you can measure both:

  • Markdown Percentage: ($100 − $60) / $100 = 40% markdown.
  • Recovery Against Retail: $10 / $100 = 10% recovery.
  • Recovery Against Cost: $10 / $40 = 25% recovery.

When To Use Each Metric

Use the markdown percentage for merchandising decisions: pricing strategy, promotional impact, and elasticity tests. Use liquidation recovery rate for operations, accounting, and inventory write-off assessments: it reflects the actual cash realized and the effectiveness of disposition channels.

Reporting Recommendations

  • Report Both, With Clear Denominators: Always label whether recovery is against cost, retail, or target to avoid confusion with markdown metrics.
  • Net To Cash: Present recovery net of disposition fees, transport, and refurbishment so comparisons are realistic.
  • Segment By Channel: Show markdown performance for full-price channels and recovery for liquidation channels separately.

Practical Implication For Stores And Warehouses

Imagine a store that routinely marks down clearance to drive traffic. If those items still end up in seasonal liquidation, the store may see strong markdown performance but poor recovery — a signal to optimize earlier markdown timing, channel segmentation, or inventory buyback terms with vendors.

In short, while markdown percentage measures the magnitude of price reductions, the Liquidation Recovery Rate tells you how much of a benchmark value you actually recouped in cash after liquidation. Use markdowns to steer sell-through and recovery to evaluate disposal success.
