Overview

Live Load is a pickup where the driver waits while goods are loaded at the origin facility. Choosing between live load and alternative methods such as drop trailer affects throughput, asset utilization, driver hours, and accessorial billing.


Live load and drop trailer are two common ways to move freight from shipper to carrier. With live load, the carrier’s driver remains at the dock while loading occurs. With drop trailer (also called drop-and-hook), the shipper or third party preloads a trailer and the arriving driver swaps tractors or hooks up and departs immediately. Each option suits different operational priorities.


Comparative Advantages


  • Live Load - Flexibility: Ideal for last-minute pickups, irregular shipment sizes, or when product finishes close to pickup time.
  • Live Load - Low Trailer Inventory: Requires fewer trailers in pool since trailers aren’t held preloaded on-site.
  • Drop Trailer - Speed: Minimizes driver detention and speeds turnaround because the driver leaves as soon as the swap is complete.
  • Drop Trailer - Throughput: Improves throughput at high-volume docks and reduces appointment constraints.


Costs And Operational Tradeoffs


Drop trailer programs require investment in trailer inventory and secure storage to keep preloaded trailers ready. Live load programs shift time cost to drivers and can create detention charges if loading runs long. A typical tradeoff analysis looks at trailer capital and yard space versus detention fees and lost productivity from driver wait time.


When To Use Live Load


Live load is often chosen when shipments are irregular (mixed SKUs, variable pallet counts), when product cannot be staged for safety or quality reasons, or when inventory turnover is so high that preloading is impractical. Smaller shippers with limited yard space frequently rely on live loads.


When To Use Drop Trailer


Drop trailer works best for high-volume, predictable loads such as retail store replenishment, cross-dock operations, and high-throughput manufacturing where trailers can be prepped, sealed, and staged securely. Carriers and shippers using drop-and-hook often see lower per-stop dwell time and better route efficiency.


Operational Considerations For Making A Decision


  • Security: Trailers left on site must be secured against theft and tampering; some locations lack suitable yard security.
  • Space: Yard size and trailer parking availability are decisive for drop programs.
  • Scheduling Accuracy: High appointment reliability favors drop trailer because preload timing must match carrier pickup.
  • Cost Modeling: Compare detention and accessorials for live load against trailer capital, storage, and yard management for drop trailer.


Practical Example


A national retailer uses drop trailer for store replenishment: its distribution center stages 100 sealed trailers per day and the carrier rotates through quickly. Conversely, a regional parts manufacturer with limited yard capacity and variable order mix uses live load: carriers schedule drivers to arrive when production completes, and loading staff palletize directly into the carrier’s trailers.


In short, the Live Load method trades off trailer inventory and yard requirements for driver wait time. Decide by measuring detention charges, trailer costs, and the predictability of your shipping pattern; a hybrid approach (drop where predictable, live load where variable) is common.
