A WMS classification for locations such as receiving, reserve, pick face, packing, staging, dock, or returns.


Operations teams often conflate location types and location zones, but they serve different planning and execution roles. A location type describes the function and rules applied to a location (for example, a pick face versus a reserve slot). A location zone groups physical slots together—often by similarity such as temperature, product family, or picking method—to manage routing, putaway, and labor allocation. Understanding the distinction helps configure WMS logic and design efficient picking and storage strategies.

How They Work Together


Most WMS implementations use both. For example, a freezer zone (geographic) will contain locations of specific types: receiving (short-term intake), reserve (bulk frozen stock), and pick face (fast-moving frozen SKUs). The WMS ensures that only SKUs with freezer flags move into the freezer zone while location types manage daily activities like putaway and replenishment. In wave planning, the system can select tasks within a zone while honoring type-level rules such as "no packing in the freezer zone".


When To Favor Types Over Zones


If your priority is enforcing process controls (inspection on receipt, quarantine for returns, packing checks), emphasize robust location types. Types are the right lever when behavior matters more than geography: they let you define who can do what and when. For example, you can prevent returns from being placed into pick-face locations by using a returns type with quarantine rules.


When Zones Are More Useful


If the main challenge is routing efficiency, temperature segregation, or grouping similar SKUs for batch picking, focus on zones. Zones are powerful for labor planning—assigning pick teams to a zone reduces travel time—and for equipment planning, such as dedicating forklifts to cold zones only.


Practical Configuration Example


A 3PL operation handling consumer electronics might configure a "dry goods" zone and an "ESD-safe" zone. Within each zone the WMS will have location types: receiving (for QC and ASN reconciliation), reserve (bulk storage), and pick-face (cart-based picking). The ESD-safe zone will prevent non-ESD SKUs from being stored there via zone rules, while the pick-face type will trigger daily replenishment from reserve locations when minimum stock levels are reached.


Tips For Designers


  • Model Both: Define clear types for behavior and establish zones for geography—don’t assume one replaces the other.
  • Document Interactions: Create a matrix showing which types are allowed in which zones and the business rules that govern movement.
  • Keep It Manageable: Avoid too many overlapping zones or types; complexity increases errors and training burden.
  • Leverage Reporting: Use zone-level KPIs for travel and throughput, and type-level KPIs for accuracy and compliance.


In short, the Location Type defines what happens at a spot; a zone defines where that spot sits in the warehouse ecosystem. Both are needed to deliver efficient, compliant operations.
