Lookalike Audience

Definition

An ad audience built from people who resemble an existing customer list, purchaser group, or engaged audience.

Overview

Lookalike Audience An ad audience built from people who resemble an existing customer list, purchaser group, or engaged audience. The term sits alongside other audience constructs — most commonly the Custom Audience — and choosing between them affects reach, precision, and campaign objectives.

Both audience types begin with a seed or data source, but they serve different tactical goals. A custom audience targets the exact group you supply (for retargeting or retention). A lookalike uses that custom audience as a seed to find new prospects like your customers. Decide on the tool by asking whether you need to engage known users or acquire similar new users.

Key Differences At A Glance

  • Targeting Intent: Custom: re-engage known users. Lookalike: acquire new prospects who behave like the seed.
  • Reach: Custom: limited to matched users; Lookalike: expands to platform users beyond your list.
  • Performance Expectation: Custom: higher relevance, usually higher conversion rates; Lookalike: scalable reach with variable conversion depending on seed quality.
  • Use Cases: Custom: cart recovery, win-back, cross-sell; Lookalike: new-customer acquisition, market expansion.

When To Use A Custom Audience

Use custom audiences when you want direct control over who sees the ad — people who have already interacted with your brand or taken a specific action.

  • Label: Retarget cart abandoners with a reminder or discount.
  • Label: Show loyalty offers to repeat buyers only.
  • Label: Exclude converters from acquisition campaigns to avoid wasted spend.

When To Use A Lookalike Audience

Use lookalikes when you need to scale prospecting by finding people likely to behave like your best customers.

  • Label: Launch a broad customer-acquisition campaign targeting users similar to your high-LTV segment.
  • Label: Enter a new U.S. region by building lookalikes from local purchasers.
  • Label: Test product-market fit faster by creating lookalikes from early adopters.

Best Practices When Using Both Together

Combining custom and lookalike audiences in a single funnel improves efficiency. Retarget users who entered the funnel (custom) while prospecting with lookalikes. Use exclusions to prevent overlap and control frequency.

  • Label: Exclude custom audiences (past purchasers) from lookalike prospecting campaigns.
  • Label: Use sequential creative: prospect with awareness creative, retarget with product offers.
  • Label: Split test seed audiences: compare lookalikes built from converters versus engagers.

Cost And Measurement Considerations

Expect different cost profiles. Custom audience campaigns often yield lower CPAs because you’re contacting known users; lookalike campaigns tend to have higher early CPAs until optimization and creative alignment improve performance.

  • Label: Track attribution separately for prospecting (lookalike) and retargeting (custom) to understand true incremental value.
  • Label: Use holdout tests: run campaigns with and without lookalike targeting to measure incremental lift.

Practical Example

A subscription box company uses a custom audience of current subscribers to serve upsell offers and a separate 1% lookalike based on long-term subscribers to drive new sign-ups. They exclude current subscribers from the lookalike campaign and measure CAC and lifetime value separately. Over three months, the lookalike program brings lower conversion rates than retargeting but generates profitable new accounts when LTV is considered.

Policy And Privacy Notes

Both audience types require lawful data handling. When uploading customer lists, follow platform hashing instructions and adhere to advertising rules for sensitive categories. The FTC’s business guidance on advertising and marketing provides relevant compliance best practices for U.S. advertisers.

In short, the Lookalike Audience complements the Custom Audience by turning a known, high-value seed into a scalable prospect pool. Use custom audiences to re-engage and lookalikes to expand — and measure both independently to optimize CAC and long-term value.
