  3. Elevate the platform to match the aircraft floor height and set docking seals/rails.

  5. Transfer cargo using rollers or powered rollers; coordinate with internal aircraft handlers.
  6. Lower the deck, disengage seals, and move the loader away when finished.

At a busy international hub, a main deck loader speeds transfer of multiple 96x125 inch pallets into a Boeing 777. Without the loader, ground staff would have to rely on conveyors or manual pushing, reducing throughput and raising the risk of injury or cargo damage.

The term Main Deck Loaders specifically denotes equipment built to serve the main deck (upper cargo deck) of wide‑body aircraft. This contrasts with lower deck or bulk loaders that are smaller and designed for narrow‑body aircraft lower holds. Main deck loaders are generally larger, have higher lift capacities, and often include features to handle ULDs and palletized freight.


Beginners should also be aware of common variants and attachments: some loaders have powered roller units for mechanized transfer, others include hydraulic extension bridges to reach deep into aircraft sills, and some are designed with extra width for oversized pallets.
