Child SKU

Definition

A Child SKU is a unique stock-keeping unit that identifies a specific variant of a product (for example, a particular size or color) linked to a parent or master SKU. It enables inventory systems, warehouses, and retailers to track stock levels, pricing, and fulfillment for each variant separately while keeping variants grouped under the same product family.

Overview

Child SKU A SKU assigned to a sellable child variant within a product family. Managing child SKUs properly in the warehouse reduces pick errors, speeds fulfillment, and improves inventory accuracy.

Operational teams treat the Child SKU as the unit of work. Receiving, putaway, cycle counts, and picking reference child SKUs. When child SKU metadata is complete—barcode type, dimensions, shelf life, and first expiration date (if perishable)—warehouse processes execute smoothly and exceptions shrink.

What Warehouse Teams Need From Child SKUs

  • Accurate Barcode Mapping: Child SKUs must be linked to scannable barcodes used on cartons or inner packs.
  • Complete Unit Data: Length, width, height, weight, and cube to inform storage and shipping decisions.
  • Pick Profiles: Preferred pick method (piece, case, or pallet) defined per child SKU.

Receiving And Putaway Practices

During receiving, scan supplier labels and map them to your child SKUs. If the supplier uses different SKUs or GTINs, ensure the receiving process prompts for cross‑reference selection. Putaway logic should use child SKU attributes (bulk vs fast‑moving) to determine storage zone and bin assignment.

Picking And Packing Considerations

Set pick strategies at the child SKU level—batch picking for high‑velocity SKUs, zone pick for bulky child SKUs, and discrete pick for fragile variants. Pack verification should compare the picked child SKUs against the sales order SKU and GTIN to prevent substitution errors.

Cycle Counting And Inventory Accuracy

Configure cycle count frequency by child SKU velocity and value. High‑turn child SKUs get more frequent counts. Use ABC/XYZ analysis to prioritize. Reconciliation processes must tie count results back to child SKU records and trigger investigations for persistent discrepancies.

Labeling And Barcode Strategy

  • Inbound Labels: Label inbound cartons with your child SKU plus GTIN to ease scanning at putaway.
  • Pick/Pack Labels: Use child SKU labels on pick faces or bin locations where feasible.
  • Shipping Labels: Ensure packing slips and manifest data list child SKUs to aid returns processing.

Integration With WMS And ERP

Child SKUs must be master‑data synchronized across WMS, ERP, OMS, and marketplace platforms. Automate feeds for changes in attributes, pricing, and availability. When SKU changes are manual, build validation checks to prevent orphaned or duplicated child SKUs in downstream systems.

Practical Tips For 3PLs And Merchants

  • Define A Single Source Of Truth: Decide which system owns child SKU definitions and enforce it via integration and governance.
  • Use Crosswalk Tables: Maintain mappings between supplier SKUs, your child SKUs, and marketplace identifiers to prevent confusion during inbound processing.
  • Limit SKU Proliferation: Only create child SKUs for units you sell separately; avoid creating SKUs for every minor packaging variant unless necessary.

In short, the Child SKU is the operational SKU for warehouse activities; disciplined master data, barcode strategy, and aligned WMS processes ensure child SKUs drive accurate, efficient receiving, storage, picking, and shipping.
