Prospecting Campaign

Definition

A paid social campaign designed to reach new potential customers who have not yet purchased from the brand.

Overview

Prospecting Campaign An advertising campaign designed to reach new potential customers who have not yet bought from the brand. Measurement for prospecting focuses on whether the campaign is expanding the funnel efficiently: driving new users into consideration, collecting signals for future targeting, and delivering cost-effective reach and engagement that lead to downstream conversions.

Successful measurement for prospecting requires separating upper-funnel outcomes (awareness, reach, site visits) from lower-funnel conversions while maintaining a line of sight between them. Because many prospecting conversions occur later — after brand exposure, multiple visits, or offline interactions — the right set of KPIs and attribution logic prevents misjudging early-stage programs as failures.

Key Performance Indicators For Prospecting

Pick KPIs that reflect funnel expansion and early engagement, then map them to your business objectives.

  • Reach & Frequency: Measures how many unique users saw your creative and how often — useful for awareness goals.
  • Impressions & CPM: Cost per thousand impressions (CPM) shows efficiency of paid reach.
  • View-Through Rate / Video Completion: For video assets, completion rates correlate with message retention.
  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): Indicates creative relevance and initial interest.
  • Landing Page Engagement: Sessions, time on site, and pages per session from new users show quality of traffic.
  • New User Conversions: Registrations, first-time add-to-cart, or first purchases attributed to new users.
  • Cost Per New User / Lead (CPNU): Cost to acquire a previously unknown visitor or lead.

Attribution And Measurement Models

Do not use last-click exclusively for prospecting campaigns — it will undercount their contribution. Choose models that credit upper-funnel touchpoints or use multi-touch approaches to reflect assisted conversions.

  • Multi-Touch Attribution: Distributes credit across several touchpoints and better represents prospecting's role in an eventual sale.
  • Data-Driven Attribution: Uses conversion data to assign weights; recommended when you have sufficient volumes.
  • View-Through Attribution: Credits conversions that occur after ad exposure without a click; valuable for display and video prospecting.
  • Incrementality Testing: Holdout or geo experiments show causal impact by comparing exposed vs. unexposed groups.

Benchmarks And Channel Differences

Benchmarks vary by channel, industry, and creative format. Use internal historical data as the primary baseline and industry benchmarks for rough expectations.

  • Paid Social: Higher engagement rates, lower CPMs for broad targeting; CTRs vary widely by creative and audience signals.
  • Display (Programmatic): Lower CTRs, useful for scale and reach; view-through metrics matter more here.
  • Video (YouTube/Connected TV): Strong for brand lift; measure completion and ad recall lift where possible.
  • Search Prospecting (Broad/Discovery): Capture intent-light queries; expect higher conversion rates when paired with audience layers.

How To Set Targets And Reporting Cadence

Set realistic targets at the campaign and cohort level with a plan to reassess after sufficient delivery. Prospecting needs time to generate downstream outcomes, so reporting should include both early engagement metrics and leading indicators of conversion.

  • Short-Term (Daily–Weekly): CPM, CTR, impressions, video completion — use to spot delivery or creative problems.
  • Mid-Term (2–6 Weeks): Landing page engagement, new user leads, add-to-cart events from new users.
  • Long-Term (1–3 Months+): Revenue from new cohorts, lifetime value (LTV) of users originated through prospecting, and incremental lift from experiments.

Practical Example

A DTC apparel brand runs a three-week prospecting video campaign on social with the objective of bringing new site visitors. Early reporting (week 1) focuses on CPM ($8), 25% video completion, and CTR (0.7%). After four weeks the marketing team measures new-user add-to-cart (1.8% of new sessions) and runs a 50% holdout test in select regions. The holdout shows a 12% uplift in new-customer purchases in exposed regions, proving incremental value beyond last-click metrics.

Practical Tips

  • Label:Use Multiple Metrics: Combine reach/engagement with new-user conversion metrics to get a full picture.
  • Label:Run Incrementality Tests: Even small holdouts reduce uncertainty about causation.
  • Label:Align Attribution With Funnel Role: Use multi-touch or view-through models for prospecting.
  • Label:Keep Baselines Updated: Recalculate benchmarks every quarter and by channel.

In short, the Prospecting Campaign should be measured with a mix of awareness, engagement, and new-user conversion metrics, using attribution and experiment designs that reflect its upper-funnel role. Proper KPIs and periodic incrementality checks prevent undervaluing prospecting while ensuring budget is spent on growth.
