Key Differences Between Parcel, LTL, And FTL
Parcel moves individual packages using carrier networks designed for high volume and small dimensions — think e-commerce parcels handled at parcel sort hubs. LTL consolidates multiple shippers’ pallets or cartons into one trailer and routes them via terminals. FTL dedicates a full trailer to one shipper and travels direct or with minimal stops. Each option changes how you pack, label, and schedule dock appointments.
When Each Mode Usually Makes Sense
- Parcel: Low-weight, high-SKU e-commerce orders or replacement parts that require single-piece handling and fast transit.
- LTL: Palletized shipments under a full-truck threshold (commonly 6–10 pallets depending on carrier) where cost per pallet matters more than fastest transit.
- FTL: Shipments that fill a trailer, are time-sensitive, high-volume, or need minimal handling to reduce damage risk.
Cost Drivers To Compare
Mode selection is ultimately a cost-versus-service trade-off but must include non-obvious drivers. Parcel pricing uses dimensional weight, surcharges (residential, fuel, delivery area), and surcharges for returns. LTL rates are built on class (NMFC), density, freight class exceptions, accessorials (liftgate, inside delivery), and transit time. FTL requires larger staging areas and coordination to load full trailers efficiently, and dock scheduling to avoid detention.
Practical Example
A consumer-electronics merchant ships 250 units a week of a single SKU. Individual customer orders average 1–2 units, while B2B resellers order pallets. For single-unit e-commerce, parcel makes sense for speed and customer expectation. For reseller pallets, LTL or FTL is cheaper per unit — use LTL when single pallets are under the FTL threshold; shift to FTL when orders regularly fill trailers or when minimizing handling risk for sensitive inventory.

- Consider hybrid strategies: Use parcel for one-offs, LTL for mixed pallet orders, and FTL for recurring large-volume lanes.
- Factor in returns: Reverse logistics costs can flip a mode’s economics—parcel-friendly returns are often essential for retail.
