- Bundle: A marketplace or merchant-created offering that contains different SKUs sold together (e.g., laptop + mouse). May be created as a virtual bundle (no new barcode) or a physical bundle (pre-packaged with its own identifier).
- Case Pack: A supplier-defined configuration (e.g., 24 bottles per case) intended for wholesale or retail replenishment rather than consumer sale; often used in receiving and transportation but not shown on storefronts.
When To Use A Multipack Variant
Create a multipack variant when customers frequently purchase multiple identical units together and the pack delivers convenience or price incentive, when packaging and labeling are specifically designed for the pack, or when channel rules (e.g., certain marketplaces) request a separate trade item identifier. Multipacks are appropriate when you want separate pricing, promotions, or product detail pages for the grouped SKU.
When To Use A Bundle
Use bundles to increase average order value or to move slow SKUs by pairing them with top-sellers. Bundles are useful for promotions, gift sets, or complementary products. If the bundle mixes different SKUs and the bundle is not a permanent product configuration, consider virtual bundling at checkout rather than creating new SKUs that increase catalog complexity.
When To Use A Case Pack
Rely on case packs for inbound and replenishment processes when suppliers define standard shipping or palletization units. Case packs help receiving, putaway, and carton-flow decisions because they reflect how product arrives from the supplier, even if those case packs are broken open to fulfill individual orders.
Operational Trade-offs
Each choice imposes operational trade-offs that affect labor, storage, and IT complexity. Creating many multipack SKUs increases SKU count and requires additional packaging and labeling, but it simplifies the pick path for orders of that configuration. Using pick-and-pack assembly reduces SKU proliferation but adds labor and potential assembly errors at fulfillment time. Virtual bundles minimize SKUs but can complicate inventory allocation and promotions logic.
How To Decide: Practical Rules
- Demand Frequency: If a pack configuration consistently represents a measurable share of demand (e.g., >10% of sales for that item), create a multipack SKU.
- Packaging Complexity: If the multipack requires unique packaging/labels or regulatory information, assign a separate SKU and identifier.
- Channel Requirements: If marketplaces require a unique GTIN or listing for multipacks, register the new identifier in advance.
- Fulfillment Cost: Compare the cost of pre-packing and storing multipacks vs. assembly at pack time to decide which approach minimizes total cost of fulfillment.
Example Decision Matrix
Consider a hygiene product sold as singles and as a 3-pack. Evaluate: sales share of 3-pack, packaging cost differential, impact on storage and pick velocity, and listing rules on target marketplaces. If the 3-pack receives consistent demand and the packaging differs, create a multipack variant with its own SKU and barcode. If demand is sporadic and assembly is simple, sell via promotions or virtual bundles that combine three singles at checkout.

- Catalog Discipline: Use standard naming and attributes (e.g., "3-Pack", "Units per Pack") to improve search and analytics.
- WMS Configuration: Ensure your WMS or inventory system supports kits, pack-level SKUs, and conversion ratios between pack and unit quantities.
- Barcode Strategy: For merchant-created multipacks, consult GS1 guidance to decide whether a new GTIN is required.
- Reporting: Track multipack sales separately to analyze cannibalization of single-unit sales and true incremental revenue.
