Overview

Onsite Retail Media Advertising shown within a retailer's or marketplace's own website or app.

Onsite retail media is the set of ad placements and promotional inventory a retailer controls inside its digital properties — product pages, search results, category pages, checkout flows, and in-app surfaces. It connects a retailer's first-party shopper signals (searches, purchase history, basket data) to sponsored listings, display ads, recommendations, and content placements that brands buy to influence purchase at the point of consideration or conversion.

Common Ad Formats

Retailers offer several ad formats tailored to different stages of the buyer journey and page real estate.

  • Sponsored Products: Keyword or placement-based promoted SKUs that appear in search results or on category pages.
  • Display and Banner Ads: Brand creatives placed on homepage, category landing pages, or within the app feed.
  • Native Recommendations: Curated “Customers Also Bought/Viewed” slots that prioritize paid inventory.
  • Checkout and Cart Placements: Promotions shown near checkout to capture incremental add-ons or subscriptions.
  • Content and Shoppable Video: Editorial-like product stories or videos with embedded buy links.

How Delivery And Targeting Work

Onsite retail media relies on the retailer’s first-party data for segmentation and targeting. Retailers use site search intent, past purchases, category affinity, and real-time basket contents to select ads and bids. Delivery typically runs through a retailer-owned ad server or a neutral ad platform integrated with demand-side platforms and brand DSPs. Many retail media networks expose API-based interfaces for creative, reporting, and bidding.

Why It Matters To Advertisers

The defining benefit for advertisers is intent-driven proximity to purchase. Ads shown onsite capture shoppers already shopping a brand’s category or comparing SKUs, which usually yields higher conversion rates and clearer incrementality than broad display buys offsite. Retailer data also improves audience accuracy and reduces spend wasted on uninterested users.

Measurement And Attribution

Retailers offer both basic and advanced measurement options. Basic reporting shows impressions, clicks, CRs, and ROAS at the SKU level. Advanced measurement layers include incrementality tests, holdout groups, probabilistic models, and enhanced match to connect ad exposure to purchase while respecting privacy constraints.

  • First-Party Analytics: Label: Direct matching of ad exposure to transaction in the retailer’s own database.
  • Incrementality Testing: Label: Randomized holdouts that measure lift versus unseen users.
  • Attribution Models: Label: Time-decay, last-touch, or multi-touch models applied on retail events.

Practical Example

A national consumer packaged goods brand runs a sponsored product campaign on a grocery retailer’s app. Using category search data and cart signals, the retailer surfaces the brand's promoted SKU on the top of search results for one week. The brand measures a 25% uplift in conversion relative to matched holdouts, tracks incremental sales by SKU, and optimizes bids for weekday search peaks.

Tips For Advertisers

  • Start With High-Intent Placements: Label: Prioritize search and category placements before broader homepage buys to maximize conversion probability.
  • Use SKU-Level Creative: Label: Match creatives to the product page experience and make price and availability clear.
  • Request Incrementality Tests: Label: Ask the retailer for A/B or holdout measurement to quantify lift versus baseline sales.
  • Coordinate With Offsite Campaigns: Label: Align messaging with DSP/paid social to avoid mixed signals and measure cross-channel effects.

In short, the Onsite Retail Media channel lets advertisers convert high-intent shoppers by placing sponsored content directly inside retailer apps and sites. When executed with product-level measurement and clear incrementality testing, it becomes a predictable, high-ROI component of a brand’s media mix.
