Order Visibility is the ability to see order status across the fulfillment process, from order receipt to delivery. It is often conflated with inventory visibility, but the two serve different operational goals in a warehouse and must be implemented and measured differently for efficient fulfillment.

Core Difference Between The Two

Order visibility focuses on the lifecycle of a specific customer order — events tied to that order's processing, shipment and delivery. Inventory visibility focuses on the location, quantity, and condition of stock across nodes (racks, bins, DCs). An accurate inventory position supports order visibility (you can’t promise and pick what you don’t have), while order visibility supplies the process context that drives inventory actions (reserves, replenishments, returns).

How They Complement Each Other

Order and inventory visibility together enable decisioning. If an order shows a backorder event (order visibility) and inventory visibility shows available units in a nearby DC, fulfillment rules can trigger a transfer or split shipment. Practical Example — A Split-Shipment Situation

An online merchant receives an order for three SKUs. The OMS allocates two SKUs from DC-A and one from DC-B. Inventory visibility confirms quantities in each DC while order visibility tracks two picks in DC-A, one pick in DC-B, two carrier pickups and two in-transit legs. Customer service sees both leg ETAs and can tell the customer which items will arrive together and which will arrive separately, preventing support tickets and improving NPS.

• Define Shared Event Taxonomy: Agree on standard event names and timestamps across OMS/WMS/TMS to avoid mismatched statuses.
• Use Reconciliation Processes: Daily reconciliation between physical counts and system records reduces order exceptions caused by phantom inventory.
• Expose Customer-Facing Status Carefully: Mask internal statuses and expose only meaningful milestones (shipped, out for delivery, delivered) while keeping internal dashboards detailed for operations.
• Automate Exception Routing: Route holds and shortages automatically to the right team with suggested resolutions (cancel, backorder, split ship, expedite).
