Both approaches are valid; the right choice depends on platform rules, GTIN requirements, the complexity of logistics, and commercial strategy. This article compares the two approaches and gives decision criteria for merchants, marketplace sellers, and warehouse operators.


Option 1 — Single Parent With Pack Size Variants


When marketplaces support quantity as a variant attribute, keep related pack sizes together under one parent. This reduces duplicate product pages and centralizes reviews, SEO signals, and product content.

  • Fulfillment Routing: Large packs often ship by pallet and may be handled by a different fulfillment flow. Separate SKUs make it easier to route those orders to bulk staging areas.
  • Return Handling: Bundles and multi-packs have unique return and restock rules; plan reverse logistics accordingly.


Marketplace Rules And GTIN Mapping


Many marketplaces and retailers require unique GTINs for each sellable configuration. Consult GS1 guidance on when a new GTIN is required — for example, when the packaging or the quantity sold to the consumer changes.

  • Document Conversions: Maintain clear unit conversion tables (e.g., case = 12 packs = 144 units) in your ERP/WMS to automate availability and replenishment.
  • Automate Marketplace Mapping: Use middleware or PIM systems to map pack-size attributes to different marketplace schemas so you can publish the same product information in multiple formats.
  • Test Search Behavior: Run A/B tests for consolidated vs separate listings to measure conversion and discoverability per channel.
