Fulfillment teams use both. For outbound e-commerce, packers apply protective packaging inside a customer-facing box. For B2B pallet shipments, protection may be applied between layers, plus stretch film and corner boards for stability. Reverse logistics centers focus on assessing whether protective materials must be replaced during returns processing or if rework is viable to return the item to inventory.


Practical Warehouse Example


A warehouse handling consumer electronics uses thin corrugated mailers (packaging material) for presentation and an ESD foam insert (protective packaging) to protect PCBs. When orders are fulfilled through a retail channel, an additional printed box is added for shelf display. In this flow, packing stations are configured so one operator places the protective insert and another applies presentation materials, minimizing mistakes and cycle time.
