Shorter pallets can be slotted in narrow aisles or lower-tier racking. When forecasting capacity, calculate bay count not just by pallet footprint but by usable vertical positions given average pallet heights.

Responsibility depends on contract terms. If a shipper provides inaccurate pallet heights that cause carrier rehandling or special equipment, carriers may charge accessorials. Within a warehouse, if receiving fails to enforce height standards and damage occurs, the warehouse may absorb rework costs. Clear SLAs in 3PL agreements should assign financial responsibility for oversize or over-height incidents.

Consider an e-commerce retailer that packs mixed SKUs to an average of 66" but creates seasonal promos that increase average height to 78". On LTL shipments this seasonally pushes the load into an over-height category requiring a lift-gate pickup and manual loading. The added accessorials, plus slower dock turnaround, increase per-pallet costs by 15–25%. A small change in packing rules — capping promo stacks or splitting pallets — can eliminate those extra charges.
