PDQ Display

Definition

A prepacked retail display designed for quick placement and minimal setup at the store; PDQ is commonly interpreted as 'pretty darn quick.'

Overview

PDQ Display A prepacked retail display designed for quick placement and minimal setup at the store; PDQ is commonly interpreted as 'pretty darn quick.' When choosing between a PDQ and other merchandising formats such as dedicated floor displays, planogram shelf facings, or pallet displays, buyers must weigh speed, labor, cost, visibility, and inventory control.

How PDQ Differs From Typical Floor Displays

Both PDQs and floor displays aim to increase visibility and incremental sales, but they differ in lifecycle and logistics. A floor display is often a permanent or semi-permanent fixture with heavier structure and designer aesthetics. PDQs prioritize ease of deployment: lightweight, prefilled, and optimized for quick movement from receiving dock to selling position.

When To Choose A PDQ Over A Floor Display

  • Short Campaign Windows: PDQs are ideal for limited-time promotions and seasonal spikes where speed matters.
  • Labor Constraints: Stores with limited merchandising staff benefit from PDQs because they require minimal setup.
  • High SKU Turnover: Fast-moving consumables that need quick replenishment work well in PDQ formats.
  • Trial/Sampling Programs: When the goal is trial and easy placement near checkout, PDQs win.

When A Floor Display Might Be Better

Floor displays make sense when a brand needs stronger structural presence, longer-term branding, or the ability to hold larger inventory without daily restocking. They also work when aesthetic integration with the store design is important and the retailer can support the labor and storage footprint.

Cost And Logistics Comparison

PDQs typically cost less to produce per unit and reduce store labor costs, but they can generate higher per-unit packaging waste. Floor displays cost more upfront and may require more complex shipping and assembly, but they last longer and can be reused across promotions.

Operational Considerations

  • Shipping: PDQs are often shipped flat-packed or as prebuilt units on pallets to be delivered directly to the store or DC.
  • Handling: Weight limits and footprint must match store equipment (e.g., can it fit through backroom doors?).
  • Returnability: Decide whether displays are disposable, recyclable, or returnable for future programs.
  • Sustainability: Material choice affects disposal costs and retailer acceptance.

Who Decides And Who Pays

Retailers often decide format based on planogram space and strategic merchandising calendars. Suppliers typically cover PDQ costs for short-term promotions; for longer-term floor fixtures, cost-sharing or retailer financing is common. Clear contracts should define who covers shipping, damaged units, and returns.

Practical Example

A snack brand evaluates two options: a premium floor display that showcases a new product year-round, or a PDQ for a two-month summer push. The PDQ drives faster in-store execution and requires minimal labor, fitting the retailer’s tight summer schedule; the floor display is chosen only for flagship locations where long-term brand presence is prioritized.

Decision Checklist

  • Campaign Length: Short < 3 months → PDQ; Long-term → Floor display.
  • Labor Availability: Low → PDQ; High → Floor display feasible.
  • Budget: Limited → PDQ for lower upfront spend.
  • Branding Need: Heavy brand storytelling → Floor display.

In short, the PDQ Display is the tactical choice when speed, low labor, and rapid rollout are priorities. For longer-term brand presence or higher-design requirements, floor displays may provide better ROI despite higher cost and installation effort.
