Selecting the right picking technology depends on SKU mix, order profile, ambient conditions, and labor strategy. Pick-to-Light and voice picking are two common guided-picking systems with different strengths. Pick-to-light relies on visual cues and works best for high-density, repetitive picks. Voice picking uses spoken instructions through headsets, enabling hands-free operation and greater flexibility for diverse layouts or changing slotting. Comparing them on concrete dimensions helps determine fit for your operation.


Speed And Throughput

Pick-to-light frequently delivers higher absolute throughput where picks are single-unit and locations are tightly slotted. The visual cue plus an immediate tactile confirmation minimizes decision time per pick. Voice systems can also be fast, especially in fluid-path picking where pickers move continuously and the system sequences spoken instructions; however, for short, repetitive picks to fixed locations, pick-to-light usually wins on lines-per-hour.

For stable slotting with consistent SKUs and high throughput, pick-to-light is preferable despite the hardware commitment.

Ambient noise, lighting, and worker demographics influence system performance. In noisy manufacturing plants or busy docks, voice systems need robust headsets with noise cancellation; they can still be used but may suffer from recognition errors. Pick-to-light requires visible sightlines — poor lighting or obstructed racks reduce effectiveness. Consider mobility needs: where pickers must carry large trays or operate in restricted spaces, pick-to-light's fixed locations may be limiting, while voice remains mobile and hands-free.

Upfront costs differ. Pick-to-light carries hardware and installation costs — modules, controllers, cabling, and integration. Voice requires hardware (headsets) and software licenses plus integration, usually with lower hardware installation overhead. ROI depends on throughput gains and error reduction: a high-velocity pick zone can pay back pick-to-light hardware quickly, while a heterogeneous or rapidly changing operation might see faster ROI with voice due to lower reconfiguration costs.
