Pipe Rack vs Pallet Rack: When To Use Each For Long Loads
Pipe Rack
Definition
A rack used to store pipe, tubing, conduit, or other long cylindrical materials.
Overview
Pipe Rack A rack used to store pipe, tubing, conduit, or other long cylindrical materials. Choosing between a dedicated pipe rack and a conventional pallet rack depends on shape, handling, throughput, and product protection needs.
Pallet racks are the backbone of many warehouses because they store palletized goods efficiently. However, they were not designed for long cylindrical stock: front uprights, limited arm depth, and pallet-handling workflows can cause damage and inefficient picking when used for pipe. Dedicated pipe racks, by contrast, are shaped to cradle, support, and give clear access to long goods.
Key Differences
Compare typical characteristics so you can decide which system fits your operation.
- Access: Pipe racks (especially cantilever) provide open-front access for forklifts and cranes. Pallet racks have front uprights that can obstruct long-load placement.
- Support Spacing: Pipe racks place support points under the load to prevent sag. Pallet rack beams are designed to support pallet loads, not long spans between supports.
- Protection: V-cradles, rubber liners, and chocks common on pipe racks prevent rolling and surface damage; pallet racks typically lack those features.
- Density: Pallet racks often offer higher pallet-per-square-foot density for palletized goods, while pipe racks maximize linear storage for long pieces.
- Flexibility: Pallet racks are highly modular for mixed SKUs and pallet loads. However, converting pallet bays to store long items often reduces pallet capacity and may complicate inventory management.
When To Choose A Pipe Rack
Choose a pipe rack when the business case includes routine handling of long, non-palletized items and requirements for product protection and quick access.
- High Volume Of Long Items: Frequent picks or staging of pipes by length or diameter favors pipe racks.
- Variable Lengths Or Fragile Coatings: Products that vary in length or need surface protection benefit from cradle supports and liners.
- Safety Concerns: If pallet rack uprights would create tipping or overhang risks, a pipe rack reduces hazards.
When Pallet Rack Makes Sense
Pallet racks remain the right choice when most inventory is palletized or when the long-item volume is low enough that dedicating floor space to pipe racks is uneconomical.
- Mixed Pallet Inventory: If 80–90% of SKUs are palletized, maintaining pallet rack maximizes throughput and cube utilization.
- Occasional Long Pieces: For occasional long items, consider portable storage carts or temporary horizontal supports rather than converting bays.
Hybrid Options
Some operators combine the two: install cantilever arms in selected pallet-rack bays or use removable cradle attachments. This hybrid approach preserves pallet density while creating dedicated pick faces for long goods.
- Removable Cantilever Arms: Attach to selected uprights to create a semi-permanent long-storage lane.
- Cross-aisle Staging: Keep long-stock on mobile cradles staged adjacent to pallet racks for temporary access.
Operational Considerations
Whichever system you pick, update pick lists, WMS locations, and safety procedures. Train forklift operators on the specific approach angles and lifting techniques required for long loads to avoid collisions and dropped material.
Cost And ROI
Pipe racks often carry a higher per-location cost than pallet beam pairs because they are engineered for cantilever loads and may be anchored more heavily. Calculate ROI using reduced damage, improved pick times, and lower safety incidents. For high-turnover long goods, ROI is often realized quickly.
In short, the Pipe Rack is the preferred solution when you handle significant volumes of long cylindrical stock that require cradle support, easy access, and surface protection; keep pallet racks when pallets dominate inventory or when long-piece volume is low enough to justify temporary solutions.
