Point-of-Sale (POS) Display

Definition

A product or promotional display positioned at or near a retail checkout or selling location.

Overview

Point-of-Sale (POS) Display A product or promotional display positioned at or near a retail checkout or selling location.

Retail teams frequently choose between POS displays and endcaps when planning promotions. Both formats target impulse buying but they occupy different store zones and influence shopper behavior in distinct ways. Selecting the right format depends on product type, objective metrics (units per week, velocity uplift), store layout, and logistics constraints like replenishment and shipping.

What Each Format Typically Covers

Understand the operational and shopper-facing differences before deciding.

  • POS Display: Sits at or near checkout lanes or high-traffic add-on points. Optimized for small-footprint impulse items—snacks, batteries, gum, travel-size personal care.
  • Endcap: Located at aisle ends, larger and more visible from multiple approaches. Better for larger promotions, seasonal assortments, or items that benefit from a bigger display mass like beverages or multipacks.

Why The Choice Matters

POS displays capture customers at the final decision point—when they are most likely to add a small item. Endcaps reach shoppers earlier and can support higher SKU counts and promotional storytelling. The trade-off is that endcaps require more floor space, stronger inventory support and sometimes reallocation of in-aisle merchandising.

How Performance Typically Differs

Performance depends on category and execution. A study of in-store fixtures often shows higher incrementality per square foot for POS placements for low-priced impulse goods because of unavoidable exposure at checkout. Endcaps can generate larger absolute volume uplift for items that need more visual mass or explanation (bundles, multipacks).

How To Decide For Your Promotion

Match the format to your campaign goals and constraints. Use the following decision factors to guide selection:

  • Objective: If the goal is quick add-on purchases, prioritize POS; if the goal is trial or awareness for a higher-priced SKU, an endcap may be better.
  • SKU Size and Weight: Heavy or bulky products are more practical on endcaps or dedicated islands rather than compact POS pedestals.
  • Replenishment Frequency: POS displays should be easy to refill daily from behind the counter; endcaps may be stocked from the aisle with pallet support.
  • Store Layout: Stores with long queues benefit more from POS units; stores with high aisle traffic might yield better endcap returns.

Who Pays And Who Executes

Brands often provide POS units as part of trade or promotional spend, with creative specified by the brand and logistical requirements mandated by the retailer. Endcap placements frequently require coordination with store operations for larger space bookings and may incur slotting or placement fees depending on the retailer.

Practical Example

A candy manufacturer testing a new flavor may deploy POS countertop displays in urban convenience stores where checkout dwell times are long. The same brand might use endcaps in grocery chains for holiday multipacks to create a large presence, justify temporary price reductions and support higher inventory on display.

Tips For Measurement

  • Baseline Sales: Record pre-promo unit sales to determine incremental lift attributable to the fixture.
  • Sell-Through Windows: Measure daily sell-through for POS (short duration) and weekly for endcaps (longer exposure).
  • Labor Impact: Track associate minutes spent on setup and replenishment to calculate net margin after merchandising costs.
  • A/B Test: Pilot both formats in matched stores to compare per-store incremental revenue and ROI.

In short, the Point-of-Sale (POS) Display excels at last-minute impulse selling where footprint and quick access matter, while endcaps create larger visual impact and support heavier or higher-priced SKUs. Choose based on product characteristics, store context and measurable campaign objectives.
