Post-Event Analysis

Definition

A review of sales, advertising, inventory, fulfillment, profitability, and customer outcomes after a shopping event.

Overview

Post-Event Analysis is a review of sales, advertising, inventory, fulfillment, profitability, and customer outcomes after a shopping event. It complements real-time analytics by providing reconciled, cross-functional insights that live data streams usually cannot deliver on their own.

Real-time analytics and post-event analysis serve different decision horizons. Real-time dashboards help teams react during a live event — throttling bids, pausing creatives, or opening extra pick lines. Post-event analysis focuses on root causes, reconciled profitability, and durable process changes after results stabilize.

Key Differences

  • Time Horizon: Real-time is minutes to hours; post-event is days to weeks for reconciled results.
  • Data Completeness: Real-time may miss returns, chargebacks, late carrier updates, or manual adjustments that post-event analysis catches.
  • Decision Type: Real-time supports tactical responses; post-event supports strategic and process changes.

When To Use Real-Time Analytics

Use live data to protect availability and conversion during an event. Examples:

  • Traffic Spikes: Increase server capacity or route traffic to CDNs when sessions surge.
  • Ad Performance Drops: Pause low-ROAS creatives to reallocate budget to better performers.
  • Fulfillment Load: Open overflow pick stations or call in temporary staff when order velocity exceeds forecast.

When To Use Post-Event Analysis

After the event, shift to a reconciled view to determine what to repeat, what to fix, and what to avoid. Typical post-event questions include:

  • Was the promotion profitable after returns and ad spend?
  • Which SKUs caused fulfillment issues or returns?
  • Did any carriers or warehouses underperform relative to SLAs?

How The Two Work Together

Design your workflow so real-time systems feed post-event analysis. Capture identifiers (order IDs, ad click IDs, shipment tracking) in live logs so later matching is possible. Use temporary dashboards during the event but schedule an automated data export that becomes the basis for the reconciled post-event P&L.

Implementation Considerations

To get reliable post-event findings, focus on these implementation details.

  • Order-Level Tagging: Ensure ad click IDs and campaign metadata are attached to orders to allow channel-level profitability analysis.
  • Inventory Sync Frequency: Reduce oversells by improving inventory sync cadence; post-event analysis will show where updates failed.
  • Central Data Store: Use a data warehouse to join eCommerce, ad, WMS, and carrier data for reconciled reporting.
  • Consistent KPI Definitions: Define ROAS, CAC, and net margin consistently across teams to avoid conflicting conclusions.

Example: How A Dual Approach Prevents False Conclusions

A retailer saw strong real-time conversions on Day 1 of a sale but noticed a sudden spike in cancellations reported later. Real-time dashboards suggested the campaign was winning; post-event analysis revealed a fulfillment bottleneck that caused partial shipments and a 12% cancellation rate, turning an apparent win into a net loss. The combined insight led to a pre-event fulfillment buffer for future flash sales and a reallocation of ad spend during critical fulfillment windows.

In short, the Post-Event Analysis complements real-time analytics by providing a reconciled, cross-functional view of event outcomes so teams can convert tactical reactions into lasting improvements.
