Good file preparation is often the difference between a smooth run and costly delays. Screen printing requires art to be separated into screens (one per color), with halftones for gradients and clear areas for registration. This guide explains practical steps designers, merchants, and warehouse production coordinators must follow to submit print-ready art.


File Formats And Color Modes


Provide vector files where possible (AI, EPS, PDF with editable vectors). Vectors scale and separate cleanly. If using raster images, send high-resolution TIFFs or PNGs at 300–600 dpi at final print size. Important color-mode rules: use spot color separation (Pantone) for screen printing; do not submit RGB composites unless you understand that the printer will convert to spot separations.


Spot Colors, Pantone, And Separations


Screen printing works best with spot colors. Convert brand colors to Pantone Matching System (PMS) values and label them in the artwork. If a design uses CMYK blends or photos, convert to halftone separations and agree on the percentage dot gain with the print shop. For metallics or specialty inks, specify the exact ink type and confirm a test print.


Vectors, Raster, And Resolution


Vectors (paths and fills) are ideal for logos and text; they ensure clean edges and accurate separations. Raster images must be placed at the exact size they will print and at a minimum of 300 dpi for halftones; for very fine detail or large-format prints, 600 dpi may be required. Avoid enlarging low-resolution images to prevent pixelation in halftone screens.


Halftones, Mesh Count, And Detail


Photorealistic images are reproduced in screen printing using halftones. The mesh count of the screen determines how fine a halftone dot can print: higher mesh counts (e.g., 230–305) reproduce finer detail and smoother gradients; lower mesh counts lay down more ink and are used for bold coverage. Communicate desired mesh counts or let the printer recommend them based on substrate and ink.


Registration, Trapping, And Overprints


Designs with multiple colors must allow for slight registration shift. Designers should include minimal overlaps (trapping) between colors to avoid white gaps. Use registration marks and clearly indicate which separations overlap. For large solids on dark garments, include an underbase white separation and specify whether it should be full or reduced opacity.


Special Effects And Ink Choices


If you plan for specialty inks — puff, discharge, metallic, or glow — flag them in the artwork and request a production sample. Each effect can require different screen tension, mesh, and curing temperatures. Discharge inks chemically remove dyes and replace them with print pigments; they give a soft hand but work mainly on natural fibers.


Practical Preflight Checklist


  • Artwork Format: Vector PDF/AI for logos; TIFF/PNG (300–600 dpi) for raster images at final size.
  • Color Specs: Provide Pantone or spot color values and separate each color into its own layer.
  • Size & Placement: State exact print dimensions, garment size references (e.g., chest placement on medium tee), and orientation.
  • Underbase Instructions: Indicate if an underbase white is required and whether you want it trapped or keyed to reduce white halo.
  • Halftone Info: Specify DPI and dot shape for halftones; request screen mesh recommendations from the printer.
  • Special Effects: Identify any special inks or finishes and request a pre-production sample.


Communication And Proofing


Always request a digital mock-up and, for brand-critical runs, a press check or a physical sample from the actual run. Confirm color proofs under consistent lighting and request a wash test where durability is a concern. For fulfillment partners and warehouses, document approved artwork files and print specifications in your order management system to avoid confusion on repeat runs.


Packaging, Labeling, And Post-Print Handling


After curing and QA, indicate how finished goods should be folded, tagged, and packed. If prints require rest time after curing, specify handling restrictions. For goods going into bonded warehouses or export, ensure inks and finishes meet any regulatory or labeling requirements for destination markets.
