Product Content

Definition

All customer-facing and structured information used to describe and sell a product online.

Overview

Product Content Customer-facing information used to explain and merchandise a product, such as titles, descriptions, features, images, and specifications.

Establishing a clear style guide for product content sets consistent expectations for how every SKU appears across sales channels. A style guide defines tone, structure, terminology, image rules, and metadata requirements so product pages are searchable, scannable, and accurate. It reduces rework between merchandisers, copywriters, and warehouse/content teams and helps automation (feeds, templates, PIM exports) produce predictable output.

What The Style Guide Typically Covers

  • Title Format: Rules for brand name placement, model numbers, size/color syntax, and use of uppercase or punctuation.
  • Description Structure: Primary selling sentence, two to five benefit-led bullets, and a technical details section.
  • Image Requirements: Minimum resolution, background, allowable overlays, and required views (front, back, scale, packaging).
  • Attributes And Metadata: Required fields (GTIN, brand, dimensions), taxonomy mapping, and SEO fields (meta title, meta description).
  • Accessibility And Legal: Alt-text rules, safety disclaimers, and required regulatory statements.

Why Consistent Product Content Matters

Consistency reduces customer friction and improves conversion. Shoppers compare titles, images, and bullets quickly; inconsistent punctuation or missing dimensions creates doubt. Consistent content also reduces returns (fewer surprises about size or compatibility), lowers customer service contacts, and simplifies automation for feeds to marketplaces and comparison shopping engines.

Key Elements And Best Practices

  • Clarity Over Cleverness: Prioritize searchable terms and essential facts in the title and first sentence.
  • Scannable Bullets: Use short, attribute-focused bullets for features and one benefit-focused bullet for use cases.
  • Canonical Specs Section: Consolidate dimensions, weight, materials, and certifications in a single technical block for both human readers and data consumers.
  • Image Set: Require a hero image on white background, alternate color views, scale/context photo, and a detailed close-up; specify pixels and aspect ratio.
  • SEO And Schema: Include meta-title and meta-description guidelines and apply structured data (schema.org/Product) to improve search result appearance.

Accessibility, Legal, And Marketplace Rules

Include explicit rules for alt text (descriptive, not keyword-stuffed) and ensure product safety information is visible where required. Marketplace feeds (Amazon, Google Shopping) have specific attribute expectations; map those fields in your guide to avoid feed rejections.

Governance And Versioning

Assign an owner for the style guide (marketing or product data), define escalation for exceptions (technical items that need different naming), and publish a version history. Tie the guide to your PIM or CMS templates so changes propagate uniformly.

Practical Example

Title rule example: Brand + Model + Key Attribute + Size. Example output: Acme Trailblazer 10L Daypack — Water-Resistant, Black. Description structure: one-sentence hook, three bullets (capacity, material, warranty), then a specs table. Image set: 2000x2000px hero on #ffffff, one lifestyle shot, one close-up of zippers, one packaging shot. Alt text example: "Acme Trailblazer 10L daypack in black, front view showing zippered pocket."

Tips For Rolling Out A Guide

  • Start With Top Sellers: Pilot the guide on best-selling SKUs to surface edge cases early.
  • Use Templates: Create copy and image templates in your PIM and CMS so contributors have a form to complete.
  • Train Contributors: Run short workshops for merchandising, photography, and warehouse teams on new rules.
  • Automate Checks: Implement validation scripts to enforce title length, required fields, and image sizes before publishing.

In short, the Product Content style guide is the operational playbook that turns product data into consistent, high-performing pages across channels. Clear rules save time, reduce errors, and improve shopper trust.
