Product Feed

Definition

A structured data file containing product details used by marketplaces, ads, or sales channels.

Overview

Product Feed A structured file or data stream containing product information such as identifiers, titles, descriptions, prices, availability, images, and attributes.

Feed errors are one of the most frequent causes of product disapprovals, suppressed listings, and poor ad performance. Troubleshooting feeds requires a methodical approach: validate structure, check required attributes, normalize identifiers, fix formatting and character-encoding issues, and monitor channel diagnostics for policy-related rejections.

Common Validation And Format Errors

Many errors stem from simple formatting issues: missing required columns in CSV, unclosed tags in XML, malformed JSON, invalid characters in URLs, or improper date formats. Other recurring problems include incorrect currency formats, mismatched GTINs or SKUs, missing image URLs, and wrong availability values. Channel parsers are strict — a single malformed row can cause a bulk failure depending on the platform.

What The Channel Diagnostics Show

Marketplace and ad platforms provide diagnostics and error reports that identify rejected items and reasons. Typical categories are disapproved item (policy), attribute error (missing or malformed), pricing error (out-of-range or currency mismatch), and availability or feed-fetch error (404 or timeouts). Use these reports as the primary source for triage and to prioritize fixes by volume or business impact.

Step-By-Step Troubleshooting Workflow

  • Validate Structure: Run XML/JSON/schema validators or open the CSV in a tool that preserves delimiters to spot column shifts.
  • Check Required Fields: Confirm that required attributes per channel spec (id, title, price, availability, link, image_link) are present and correctly formatted.
  • Verify Identifiers: Ensure GTINs, MPNs, and SKUs are correct and consistent. Wrong identifiers cause mismatches and hamper advertising eligibility.
  • Test URLs: Validate landing pages and image URLs return 200 OK and are not blocked by robots.txt or authentication.
  • Inspect Encoding: Use UTF-8; wrong encodings produce unreadable characters and parsing failures.

Fixes For Specific Errors

  • Missing Images: Host accessible images and supply absolute URLs; avoid redirects that cause timeouts.
  • Price Mismatches: Keep feed prices synchronized with the landing page price; many channels disapprove mismatches.
  • Invalid Dates: Use ISO 8601 where required and ensure timezone handling is correct for promotional dates.
  • Attribute Mapping Errors: Use a mapping layer to transform internal attribute names to the channel’s expected attributes to prevent misplacement of data.

Operational Controls To Reduce Future Errors

Automate validation as part of the feed generation pipeline, and run pre-upload checks that mirror the channel’s validation rules. Schedule incremental uploads to limit the blast radius of a bad file. Implement monitoring and alerts for critical failures and create rollback procedures. Keep a changelog of feed schema changes so you can quickly correlate new errors with recent updates.

Practical Example

A retailer noticed a spike in disapproved items after a nightly feed update. Diagnostics flagged invalid GTINs and missing image_link fields. The root cause was a recent product import that created variants without GTINs and a CDN migration that changed image URLs. The fix involved running a script to backfill GTINs from supplier data, updating the mapping to include the new image host, and adding a pre-upload URL check to the pipeline.

Tips For Faster Resolution

  • Keep A Test Feed: Maintain a small, representative test feed for validation before pushing bulk changes.
  • Document Errors: Build a playbook that maps common diagnostic messages to specific fixes for on-call staff.
  • Use Channel APIs Where Helpful: APIs often provide immediate validation feedback and item-level error messages that are easier to automate against than batch file responses.

In short, the Product Feed troubleshooting process combines structural validation, channel diagnostics, identifier hygiene, and operational controls. Fix root causes (mapping, encoding, ingestion) and add validation and monitoring to prevent repeat failures, keeping listings live and ad performance steady.
