A unique number assigned by Companies House when a UK company or applicable overseas company registration is created.

Overview

Company Registration Number (CRN) A unique number assigned by Companies House when a UK company or applicable overseas company registration is created. For warehouse, 3PL and freight teams the CRN is a practical verification tool that helps match paperwork, assign liability and support customs and compliance processes.

Warehouse operators dealing with UK suppliers or customers should request CRNs as part of their standard onboarding and documentation workflows. The CRN helps link commercial paperwork to the correct legal entity, supports auditing of inbound and outbound movements, and reduces disputes caused by ambiguous company names.

Operational Uses In A Warehouse Context

Practical touchpoints for the CRN in a warehouse include receiving documentation, carrier handovers, storage contracts and returns handling. Including the CRN in an order record or on shipping labels creates a clear audit trail that ties goods to the legal entity responsible for them.

  • Goods receiving: Match supplier CRN on the delivery note with the purchase order and Companies House record.
  • Carrier handover: Put the CRN on bills of lading and carrier manifests where the consignee or shipper must be unambiguous.
  • Storage contracts: Use CRNs in warehouse contracts and liability clauses to ensure the contract references the correct legal party.

Why Warehouses Should Record The CRN

Recording the CRN improves traceability and simplifies dispute resolution. When goods are held pending customs clearance, the CRN helps customs brokers and freight forwarders confirm the corporate identity of the importer or exporter. For returns and claims, a CRN provides a single reference that legal and finance teams can use to reconcile transactions.

How To Integrate CRNs Into Warehouse Systems

Operationalize CRN capture by adding a mandatory field to supplier/customer master records in your WMS/ERP and validating the number during onboarding. Use Companies House API lookups to auto‑populate registered addresses and filing status, reducing manual entry errors and saving onboarding time.

  • Master data setup: Add CRN as a required identifier in your supplier and customer master files.
  • Automated validation: Integrate Companies House checks at the point of data entry to confirm an entity is active.
  • Document templates: Include the CRN on packing lists, invoices and labels where appropriate.

Customs, Imports And Exports

While CRNs are not substitutes for customs identifiers like EORI, they are useful when customs brokers need to confirm who a UK importer or exporter is. Warehouses preparing goods for export should ensure the CRN is recorded alongside the EORI and VAT numbers so customs declarations and commercial invoices are consistent across parties.

Practical Example For A 3PL Warehouse

A 3PL onboarding a new UK client requests the client's CRN during account setup. The 3PL validates the CRN via Companies House, records it in the WMS, and configures packing list templates to print the CRN on outbound documentation. When a customs query arises, the 3PL can quickly provide the CRN along with the client’s EORI and VAT numbers to the broker, shortening resolution time.

Checklist For Warehouse Teams

  • Collect at onboarding: Obtain CRN, EORI and VAT where relevant.
  • Validate and store: Verify the CRN against Companies House and store it in master data.
  • Include on docs: Add CRN to packing lists, invoices and contractual documents where legal identity must be clear.

In short, the Company Registration Number (CRN) is a practical verification and recordkeeping tool for warehouse and logistics teams. Capturing and validating CRNs during onboarding and including them on operational documents reduces ambiguity, supports customs processes and strengthens your audit trail.
