What Is Liftgate Service? When To Request It

Definition

A freight service using a truck-mounted liftgate when a shipping or receiving location lacks a suitable loading dock.

Overview

Liftgate Service is a freight service using a truck-mounted liftgate when a shipping or receiving location lacks a suitable loading dock.

Liftgate service provides a mechanical platform mounted to the rear of a delivery truck that raises or lowers freight between the ground and the truck bed. Carriers add this capability to standard less-than-truckload (LTL) pickups and deliveries when shippers or consignees cannot load or unload by forklift or a raised loading dock. The service removes the need for a customer-supplied lift or dock-leveler, but it carries time, equipment, and liability implications that shippers and warehouse managers must plan for.

When The Service Applies

Liftgate service is appropriate any time a pickup or delivery point cannot safely or legally move freight between ground level and the trailer without equipment. Typical scenarios include:

  • Rural stores or job sites: Small businesses, construction sites, and pop-up locations without permanent docks often need a lift for palletized loads.
  • Residential deliveries: Homes and apartment complexes rarely have truck docks and frequently require a lift.
  • Retail receiving areas: Back-of-store areas that are street-level but lack a dock plate or forklift access.
  • Temporary sites: Trade shows, events, and short-term warehouses without built infrastructure.

How Liftgate Service Works In Practice

A carrier schedules a driver and truck equipped with a hydraulic liftgate. At pickup or delivery the driver positions the trailer, lowers the platform, and either the shipper/receiver or the driver moves the freight between the lift and the dock/ground. Responsibilities should be clarified in advance: some carriers expect the receiving location to handle pallet movement once on the lift, while others will assist for an added fee. Timed appointments, clear approach lanes, and unobstructed ground space make the operation faster and safer.

What The Fee Typically Covers

  • Equipment usage: Compensation for the truck’s hydraulic lift and related maintenance.
  • Driver time: Extra minutes spent raising/lowering the lift and assisting with cargo movement.
  • Liability adjustment: Higher risk exposure for carriers, reflected in per-shipment or flat liftgate surcharges.

Why It Matters To Shippers And Warehouses

Requesting liftgate service avoids refused deliveries and last-minute rerouting. For warehouses and merchants it reduces inbound delays and prevents damage from improvised offloading. However, unnecessary or poorly coordinated liftgate requests raise costs and risk: lift operations take longer than dock transfers, and uneven ground or inadequate staffing at the location increase damage and injury risk.

How To Decide Whether To Request Liftgate

  • Inspect the location: Confirm whether a dock, dock plate, forklift, or loading bay exists.
  • Consider the freight: Bulky, heavy, or palletized loads typically need a lift if no dock is available.
  • Factor cost vs. delay: If a missed delivery will cost more than the liftgate surcharge, request it in advance.

Practical Example

A manufacturer ships a pallet of display racks to a small retailer that only has a street-level receiving area. The shipper marks the BOL to require liftgate service. The carrier assigns an LTL truck with a lift; at delivery the driver lowers the platform and moves the pallet to the retailer’s doorway. Because the recipient had pre-cleared space and personnel available to move the pallet inside, the unload took 12 minutes and no additional fees were requested.

Tips For Smoother Liftgate Deliveries

  • Communicate access details: Note narrow alleys, overhead wires, curbs, or low-hanging structures on the shipment booking.
  • Schedule appointments: Appointments reduce driver wait time and the chance of rescheduled deliveries.
  • Provide assistance if possible: If the receiving site can help move freight once on the lift, the carrier may waive or reduce extra handling charges.
  • Confirm weight and dimensions: Overweight or oversized pallets may exceed a liftgate’s capacity; clarify limits with the carrier.

In short, the Liftgate Service is a practical solution when a dock or forklift isn’t available, but it brings added cost, time, and safety considerations. Proper booking, clear site notes, and on-site support minimize fees and risks and make the operation efficient.
