Definition

A pallet with saddle-shaped supports for cylindrical or curved products.

Overview

Saddle pallet

A pallet with saddle-shaped supports for cylindrical or curved products. These pallets pair a load-bearing deck with curved or V-shaped saddles (fixed or removable) that cradle pipes, drums, coils, reels, and other round loads to stabilize them during storage and transport.

Designs range from simple wooden pallets fitted with nailed or bolted wooden saddles to engineered plastic and metal pallets with molded or welded cradles. The saddle profile concentrates support along curved contact points rather than a flat plane, reducing lateral movement and rolling risk. Typical saddle pallets are custom-sized to match load diameters and lengths, and can be combined with blocking, chocks, or straps for additional restraint.

How Saddle Pallets Differ From Standard Pallets

Saddle pallets are purpose-built for geometry — they trade the flat, continuous deck of a standard pallet for interrupted support points shaped to a load’s curve. That difference changes how the unit load behaves:

  • Contact Points: Saddle pallets contact the load at localized curved surfaces, reducing roll and lateral shift compared with a flat deck.
  • Load Profile: They accommodate cylindrical shapes without extensive dunnage or customized blocking on a flat deck.
  • Stacking And Footprint: Depending on design, saddle pallets can limit safe stacking; many require single-layer or staggered stacking for safety.

Common Materials And Construction

Saddle pallets are built from the same materials used in other pallets, selected to meet strength, hygiene, and regulatory needs:

  • Wood: Economical and easy to customize; common for short runs and heavy loads. Wooden saddles can be angled planks or laminated cradles.
  • Plastic: Molded or thermoformed saddles offer repeatable geometry, corrosion resistance, and easy cleaning—useful in food, chemical, and pharmaceutical supply chains.
  • Metal: Steel or aluminum saddles used for very heavy or high-temperature loads where dimensional stability is critical.

Typical Applications

Saddle pallets are chosen when the load shape and handling process make standard pallets inefficient or unsafe. Examples include:

  • Pipes And Tubing: Long runs of steel or PVC pipe are placed in multiple saddle supports to keep them aligned and off the deck.
  • Drums And Barrels: Individual drums can be cradled to avoid rolling and allow secure strapping.
  • Coils And Cable Reels: Wire reels and metal coils rest in saddles sized to their arbor and flange diameters.

Why Saddle Pallets Matter

They increase load stability and handling efficiency for cylindrical items. A correctly specified saddle pallet reduces the need for ad hoc blocking, speeds forklift placement and pickup, lowers damage risk, and can improve worker safety by preventing sudden roll events during loading, staging, or transport.

How To Specify A Saddle Pallet

Specify based on the product geometry, weight, handling method, and transport mode. Key parameters:

  • Diameter And Length: Saddle curvature radius and spacing must match the product to avoid point loading or insufficient support.
  • Number Of Saddles: Longer loads require multiple saddles spaced to control sag and lateral movement.
  • Material And Hygiene Needs: Choose plastic or metal where cleanliness or corrosion resistance is required.
  • Forklift Access: Specify 2-way or 4-way access and whether the saddles are integral or removable for stacking and nested storage.

Operational Considerations And Best Practices

Using saddle pallets safely requires attention to handling, securing, and storage:

  • Securement: Use straps, webs, or chocks across saddles. For road transport, comply with cargo securement rules for cylindrical loads.
  • Inspection: Inspect saddles for wear, splits, or deformations that can create sharp contact points or reduce stability.
  • Stacking: Avoid stacking long cylindrical loads vertically unless the pallet design and load permit. Follow manufacturer's stacking guidelines.
  • WMS Tagging: Record saddle pallet dimensions and allowable load types in the warehouse management system to prevent misuse.

In short, the Saddle pallet serves a targeted role: cradle curved or cylindrical products to improve stability, reduce damage, and make handling predictable. Proper specification and securement are essential to realize those benefits.
