What Is SSCC-18 and How Retailers Use It During Receiving

Serial Shipping Container Code; a unique 18-digit GS1 identifier assigned to a logistics unit such as a carton or pallet.

Overview

SSCC-18

The 18-digit Serial Shipping Container Code commonly encoded on logistics labels for retail receiving. The SSCC-18 uniquely identifies a single logistic unit (pallet, carton, or other shipping container) so that receiving, inventory, and warehouse systems can track that unit throughout the supply chain.

Retail receiving workflows use the SSCC-18 as the primary identifier on incoming logistic labels and electronic advanced ship notices (ASNs). The code is machine-readable when encoded with Application Identifier (00) in a GS1-128 barcode (or in other GS1 data carriers) and is referenced in EDI and EPCIS event messages so warehouse management systems (WMS) and retail receiving docks can automate putaway, verification, and reconciliation against purchase orders.

What The Code Covers

The SSCC-18 identifies the logistic unit itself; it does not identify the products inside. Use cases include:

  • Pallet Tracking: A pallet delivered to a retail DC uses an SSCC-18 to tie ASN lines and pallet contents to a single scannable code.
  • Cross-Docking: Rapid identification of units for flow-through operations without opening cases.
  • Returns And Reverse Logistics: Tracking returnable containers and serialized shipments.

Why It Matters To Retail Receiving

Receiving accuracy and speed are critical at retail distribution centers and stores. A correctly formatted and encoded SSCC-18 enables:

  • Automation: Scanners and WMS can accept or reject inbound units automatically by matching SSCCs to ASNs.
  • Traceability: SSCCs feed into traceability systems for recalls and stock investigations.
  • Auditability: Each movement of a logistic unit can be logged against a persistent identifier.

How The SSCC-18 Is Structured

The 18 digits have a defined layout under GS1 rules. Typical fields include:

  • Extension Digit: One digit (0–9) used by the company to increase the numbering capacity.
  • GS1 Company Prefix: A block of digits assigned to the organization (variable length depending on the company prefix size).
  • Serial Reference: Digits assigned by the company to create a unique code for the logistic unit.
  • Check Digit: A single check digit (last digit) computed with the GS1 modulo 10 algorithm to validate the number.

When encoded on a label, the SSCC is preceded by the Application Identifier (00) in a GS1-128 barcode. Human-readable display is optional but recommended near the barcode for manual verification.

How To Generate And Validate An SSCC-18

Generation practices for retail suppliers and 3PLs should be consistent and documented so receiving systems can rely on them. Steps include:

  • Assign Extension Digit: Choose an extension digit (often 0) to expand numbering capacity.
  • Insert Company Prefix: Use your GS1-assigned company prefix; its length affects the serial reference length.
  • Create Serial Reference: Generate a unique sequential or randomized serial reference for each logistic unit. Never reuse an SSCC for active units in the supply chain.
  • Calculate Check Digit: Compute the final check digit using the GS1 modulo 10 algorithm (weights alternate 3 and 1). Many WMS, label software, or online calculators will perform this step automatically.

Who Assigns And Uses The SSCC-18

GS1 governs the SSCC structure; your company obtains a GS1 company prefix from the appropriate GS1 organization. Typical stakeholders in retail supply chains:

  • Suppliers: Assign SSCC-18s to outgoing logistic units and include them on ASN/EDI 856 messages.
  • Carriers: Scan SSCCs during pickup and delivery events to provide traceability during transit.
  • Retail DCs and Stores: Scan SSCCs at receiving to confirm ASN contents, direct putaway, and update inventory in the WMS or order management system.

Practical Example

A supplier packs a pallet for a retail chain and assigns SSCC-18 000123456789012345 (example only). The supplier prints a GS1-128 label with (00)000123456789012345 and includes the SSCC in the ASN. The carrier scans the pallet at pickup and again at delivery. At the retail DC, receiving personnel scan the GS1-128 barcode, the WMS matches the SSCC to the ASN, the system confirms SKUs and quantities, and the pallet is routed to the appropriate staging or putaway lane. The SSCC remains associated with that pallet record through putaway and any subsequent moves.

Tips For Retail Receiving Teams

  • Require (00) Encoding: Ask suppliers to encode the SSCC with Application Identifier 00 in a GS1-128 barcode for predictable scanning.
  • Validate Check Digits: Enable scanner or WMS validation of the check digit to catch mis-typed or damaged labels.
  • Match To ASN: Use SSCC-to-ASN matching to speed reconciliation—do not rely solely on PO numbers for pallet-level validation.
  • Document Label Placement: Specify label placement on pallets and master cartons so scanners and forklifts can read codes without unwrapping.

In short, the SSCC-18 is the standard retail supply-chain identifier for a logistic unit that enables automated receiving, traceability, and reconciliation when encoded and managed according to GS1 guidelines.
