Overview

Team Lift Label

A safety label indicating that a package should be lifted by more than one person; some fulfillment programs require this wording above specified weights.

Used widely in warehouses, distribution centers, and on packaged goods moving through third-party logistics (3PL) networks, the Team Lift Label is a simple visual control intended to prevent manual material-handling injuries by prompting a two-person (or more) lift. The label is a behavioral cue: it does not change the load or the handling equipment but directs staff to use a safer manual-handling technique or to bring mechanical aids when appropriate.

Why The Label Matters

Manual lifting is a leading cause of sprains, strains, and musculoskeletal injuries in warehouses. A clearly visible team lift notice reduces the chance that a single worker will attempt an unsafe lift on a heavy, awkward, or bulky package. Beyond safety, consistent labeling lowers incident rates, cuts workers' compensation costs, and helps facilities meet OSHA and insurer expectations for hazard controls.

How Fulfillment Programs Use The Label

Some fulfillment providers and marketplaces set explicit thresholds (for example, any parcel over 40 pounds or specific dimensions) that require Team Lift Label wording. Compliance avoids package refusal or repack requests and ensures inbound handling is predictable for receiving teams. The label can be a contractual requirement in vendor manuals, especially for high-volume fulfillment where a single inattentive lift could cascade into operational delays.

Design And Placement Best Practices

  • Label Size: Make the instruction large enough to read from the conveyor or pallet — commonly 3" x 5" or larger for palletized freight.
  • Contrast And Symbols: Use high-contrast colors and an internationally recognized two-person lift pictogram alongside text for quick recognition.
  • Placement: Apply on the most visible face of the carton or on two opposite faces for pallets so handlers see it from the dock or conveyor.

Operational Rules To Pair With The Label

Labels work best when paired with clear operating procedures. Define weight/dimension thresholds that trigger a team lift, list exceptions (e.g., when mechanical aids must be used instead), and standardize who is responsible for providing the second lifter during receiving, picking, or loading. Update WMS or pick/pack screens to show team-lift flags so handlers are warned before they touch the item.

When A Team Lift Label Is Not Enough

Some loads are too heavy, unstable, or bulky for two people alone. If the package exceeds safe manual-lifting limits or contains hazardous contents, require mechanical handling (dollies, pallet jacks, or lift assists) and add a separate mechanical-handling label. Train staff to stop and escalate if a package feels heavier or more awkward than its label indicates.

Training And Enforcement

Training should cover proper two-person lift techniques — stance, communication, timing, and load handling — and when to refuse a lift. Supervisors should audit compliance during inbound receiving and high-risk pick zones. Record near misses and injuries tied to labeled packages to validate threshold settings and label placement.

Cost And Procurement Considerations

Team lift labels are low-cost but high-value controls. Consider pre-printing on corrugated sheets for high-volume SKUs or using adhesive thermal-transfer labels for variable data (e.g., order numbers). If a fulfillment program mandates the label, factor label production and application labor into landed-cost calculations.

Practical Example

A 3PL receives a vendor shipment of furniture components. The vendor applies a Team Lift Label on all cartons over 40 lb. Receiving staff see the label at the dock, call a second handler, and move multiple cartons together using the two-person technique onto a pallet jack. The result: no manual-lift incidents and predictable throughput at receiving.

In short, the Team Lift Label is a low-cost, high-impact control that alerts handlers to use multiple people or mechanical aids for specific packages. When combined with clear thresholds, training, and WMS flags, it reduces injury risk and improves compliance with fulfillment program requirements.
