Mixed SKU Carton

Definition

A carton containing more than one SKU, often identified so receiving or fulfillment operations know the case is not homogeneous.

Overview

Mixed SKU Carton A carton containing more than one SKU, often identified so receiving or fulfillment operations know the case is not homogeneous. Receiving mixed cartons correctly preserves inventory accuracy and minimizes downstream picking errors.

This article outlines practical receiving procedures, labeling requirements, and WMS configuration tips to handle mixed cartons efficiently in a U.S. warehouse or 3PL. The goal is to reduce touches while maintaining traceability and speed.

Receiving Procedure Best Practices

At receiving, treat every mixed carton as a multi-line inventory unit. Recommended steps:

  • Step 1 — Scan Carton SSCC: Scan the carton-level barcode so the WMS retrieves the manifest and expected lines.
  • Step 2 — Verify Contents: Scan inner pack barcodes or a summary content barcode to confirm SKU and counts.
  • Step 3 — Record Exceptions: If quantities differ, capture the discrepancy immediately and flag the carton for inspection.
  • Step 4 — Route According To SOP: Send the carton to a breakdown area, kit station, or direct putaway depending on the manifest and business rules.

Labeling Requirements For Efficiency

Labels should make mixed cartons machine- and human-readable. At minimum include:

  • SSCC Barcode: Links the carton to its manifest in the host system.
  • Human Summary: A short list of SKUs and quantities so staff can quickly assess the carton without scanning.
  • Handling Notes: Indicate if the carton's contents are fragile, temperature-sensitive, pre-kitted, or hazardous.

WMS Configuration And Workflow Tips

Your WMS should support carton-level multi-line inventory and these behaviors:

  • Carton Manifesting: Accept a carton SSCC mapped to multiple SKU lines and allow editing during receiving.
  • Partial Picks: Permit picking of individual SKUs from a carton while maintaining accurate remaining quantities.
  • Staging Rules: Automatically route mixed cartons to kit or breakdown areas instead of bulk putaway where appropriate.

Picking And Replenishment Considerations

Decide whether mixed cartons should be opened at receiving or left intact until pick time. Common approaches:

  • Break At Receiving: Open and put away SKUs immediately—reduces complexity at picking but increases inbound labor.
  • Break At Pick Time: Leave cartons intact and stage them near pick zones—reduces inbound touches but increases complexity during picking.

Exception Handling And Traceability

Establish clear SOPs for damaged, short, or over-packed mixed cartons. Keep carton-level records (SSCC) tied to lot/expiration information for regulated SKUs to enable quick recall actions without having to search across multiple homogeneous cases.

Training And KPIs

Train receiving teams on correct scan order, verifying manifest lines, and handling exceptions. Monitor KPIs such as receiving accuracy (variance per carton), touches per carton, and time-to-availability (how long until carton contents are available for picking).

Practical Receiving Example

A fulfillment center uses mixed cartons for subscription box components. Receiving scans the carton SSCC, the WMS auto-populates four SKU lines, and the carton is routed to a kit area. If a carton is short one item, the receiver records the variance and an automated replenishment task is generated for the missing SKU. The remaining SKUs are still available for other orders.

In short, the Mixed SKU Carton requires explicit labeling, WMS manifesting, and disciplined receiving workflows. When those pieces are in place the approach reduces packaging waste and shipping costs while maintaining inventory visibility and order accuracy.
