Sellable Unit Vs Case Pack Vs Each: Which Retail Unit Should You Use?
Sellable Unit
Definition
A unit or pack configuration intended to be sold as a distinct item.
Overview
Sellable Unit A unit or pack configuration intended to be sold as a distinct item. Choosing whether to treat the sellable unit as an "each," an inner pack, or a case pack affects pricing, inventory management, logistics, and channel compliance.
Retailers and manufacturers must decide the primary sellable unit per channel. A convenience store typically expects sellable units at the each level, a wholesaler at the case level, and some online channels may accept either depending on order minimums. The decision influences GTIN assignment, shelf-facing packaging, handling costs, and system configuration.
Key Differences
- Each: Single consumer item sold individually; requires an each-level GTIN and retail packaging suitable for immediate sale.
- Case Pack: A group of sellable units packed together for distribution; case GTINs facilitate DC handling and palletization but are not always sold at POS.
- Multipack/Bundles: Intentional grouping of sellable units sold as one SKU (seasonal promos, value packs) and must have their own GTIN if sold at POS.
How The Choice Affects Cost And Operations
Handling each-level sellable units increases pick complexity, pack materials, and last-mile cost but reduces customer friction in impulse and convenience channels. Case-level sellable units reduce pick labor and packing materials (more volume per movement) but require retailers or resellers to break bulk. Multipacks often sit between these extremes and can be used to promote higher basket value.
When To Use Each Type
- Use Each: High-velocity consumer goods sold directly to shoppers (snacks, personal care) and channels that price per item at POS.
- Use Case Pack: Wholesale customers, B2B buyers, or when the retailer wants to receive and replenish by case to minimize handling.
- Use Multipack/Bundles: Promotional offers, private-label bundles, or when merchandising requires a distinct retail presentation.
Impacts On Data And Compliance
Each sellable unit presented to the customer should carry the correct GTIN and required regulatory labeling. For cross-border shipments, customs and marking requirements apply to the sellable unit and case pack; provide clear documentation of pack contents and GTINs to avoid clearance delays.
Practical Decision Framework
- Channel Requirements: Ask buyers which sellable unit they will scan at POS. Prioritize that configuration for GTIN assignment and packaging design.
- Cost-To-Serve: Compare fulfillment costs per sellable unit type (handling, packaging, transportation, returns) and choose the format that meets margin and service objectives.
- Inventory Visibility: Ensure your ERP/WMS records unit hierarchy so inventory levels at each sellable unit are accurate for reporting and replenishment.
Example Comparison
A personal-care brand sells shampoo in 16-oz bottles (each). Big-box retailers buy cases of 12 bottles, which the retailer breaks into shelf eaches. An online grocer prefers to purchase and ship six-packs to reduce handling. The manufacturer assigns three GTINs (each, six-pack, case) and configures its WMS to convert and allocate inventory by requested sellable unit per order.
In short, the Sellable Unit is the retail-level configuration customers scan and buy; choosing between each, case pack, or multipack depends on channel expectations, cost-to-serve, and inventory-system capability—document the choice in GTINs and WMS data to avoid operational friction and downstream errors.
