Understanding their differences helps teams route alerts, manage SLAs, and process claims correctly.

  • Scope: A shipment event can be any status change (pickup, transit, exception). A delivery notification specifically indicates final delivery or delivery attempt.

Best-practice platforms ingest all shipment events and then generate purpose-built messages. A TMS will store raw events; business logic will translate selected combinations into higher-level notifications (e.g., when a "Delivered" event appears with a signature image, the system issues a delivery notification to the merchant and marks the order complete). This separation ensures fidelity of source data while delivering clear outcomes to users.


Impact On Claims, SLAs, And Customer Communication


Claims teams rely on the event trail to prove handling and timelines; a single delivery notification alone may be insufficient without preceding events that show the shipment’s path. SLAs are measured by specific events (pickup time vs. delivery time). For customer-facing communication, over-notifying with every scan causes noise; sensible rules that surface only significant events (including delivery notifications) reduce support volume.


Practical Example


A consumer orders a high-value electronics item. The carrier generates frequent transit scans (shipment events). On the scheduled day, the driver records an "Out For Delivery" event, followed by "Delivery Attempted" when no one is home, and finally a "Delivered" event with a photo of the porch. The retailer’s system translates the final event and photo into a delivery notification to the customer and flags the order as delivered for accounting.


Tips For Managing Events And Notifications


  • Define Notification Rules: Only send customer-facing notifications for events that affect them — pickup, expected delivery window, exceptions, final delivery.
  • Preserve Originals: Store raw event data and POD artifacts to support claims even if you only surface simplified notifications externally.
  • Normalize Semantics: Map different carriers' delivery-related codes into a consistent "delivered/delivery attempted/pod" schema.
