Overview

Pallet shrink wrapping is less common than stretch wrapping for standard unit-load containment, but it has important use cases. Shrink hoods deliver superior weather protection, improved tamper evidence, and a tight, aerodynamic profile for export crates and irregular-shaped machinery. Understanding when to use shrink hoods and how to run them efficiently helps warehouses add protection without excess cost or safety risk.


Types Of Pallet Shrink Systems


  • Shrink Hoods: Pre-formed hoods of LDPE or polyolefin placed over the pallet and moved through a tunnel or exposed to hot air; they conform tightly and fully cover the top and sides.
  • Pallet Shrink Tunnels: Large tunnels sized to accept a pallet-lined conveyor; hoods or films pass through and are shrunk by hot air or infrared.
  • Manual Hooding With Heat Guns: Low-volume approach where operators place hoods and shrink them with hand-held hot air tools—slower but lower capital cost.


When To Use Shrink For Pallets


  • Weather Protection: Export pallets subject to wet transit or storage benefit from fully enclosed shrink hoods.
  • Irregular Loads: Machinery or items with protrusions that are difficult to stabilize with stretch film can be effectively enclosed with a shrink hood.
  • Corrosion Prevention: Combined with desiccants or corrosion inhibitor films, shrink hoods create a tight micro-environment for metal goods.


Film Selection And Gauge


For pallets, thick LDPE or heavy-duty polyolefin hoods are typical. Gauge selection depends on load weight and sharp edges; 80–200 gauge (20–50 micron) equivalents are a starting point for light loads, while heavy or jagged shipments may require thicker material or protective corner boards to prevent punctures. Choose UV-stabilized or opaque films for long-term outdoor storage.


Equipment Considerations


  • Tunnel Size And Heat Source: Pallet tunnels must provide uniform heat; infra-red arrays or long hot-air tunnels work well. Ensure tunnels are rated for the film type and canopy size.
  • Conveyor And Throughput: Integrate tunnels with conveyors or pallet rollers for steady flow—match tunnel dwell time to film shrink requirements.
  • Manual Vs Automated: Automated hooding lines are faster and more consistent but require capital; manual hooding is flexible for multiple SKU sizes but labor-intensive.


Process Steps For A Typical Pallet Hooding Line


Prepare load (stretch or clamp base if needed) → place shrink hood over pallet → move pallet through shrink tunnel or apply hot air until film fully shrinks → allow cool down and perform quality inspection. Time in tunnel and heat settings depend on hood material, film retraction percentage, and pallet size.


Quality Checks And Common Defects


  • Coverage: Inspect every pallet for full side/top coverage—missed areas allow moisture ingress.
  • Punctures: Check for punctures caused by sharp corners or misaligned skids; use corner protectors where possible.
  • Overheating: Heat-damaged labels or product discoloration indicate excessive tunnel temperature or dwell time.


Safety And Facility Requirements


Shrink tunnels and handheld heat sources generate high temperatures and fumes. Provide proper exhaust ventilation, maintain clearance from combustible materials, and ensure operators wear heat-resistant PPE when using handheld tools. Confirm local fire codes for fixed tunnel installations and provide emergency shut-offs. Regularly service burners, fans, and controls to minimize downtime and safety hazards.


Costing And Efficiency Tips


  • Film Optimization: Match hood size to pallet dimensions to avoid excess film cost and reduce waste.
  • Energy Management: Run tunnels at consistent loads to maintain efficient burner/fan operation—cold starts waste energy.
  • Hybrid Approaches: Use shrink hoods selectively for export or sensitive loads and rely on stretch wrapping for standard domestic pallet shipments to balance protection and cost.


Practical Example


An electronics manufacturer uses shrink hoods for export pallets bound for long ocean transit. Each pallet is hooded with LDPE film, moved through a medium-length tunnel, and cooled. The result is superior moisture sealing and tamper evidence compared with stretch wrap alone. Domestic shipments use automatic stretch wrappers to save film and cost while maintaining transport stability.


In short, the Shrink Wrapping approach for pallets offers a higher degree of enclosure and protection than stretch wrapping but at higher material and energy cost. Use shrink hoods for weather-sensitive exports, irregular or fragile loads, and when a tight protective envelope is required; use stretch wrapping for standard pallet unitization where cost and speed are priorities.
