SKU Mapping vs Product Identifiers: GTIN, UPC, ASIN And Internal SKUs
SKU Mapping
Definition
The process and data model used to align and reconcile product identifiers (SKUs, UPCs, or internal codes) across a WMS and eCommerce channels to ensure accurate order fulfillment, returns handling, and inventory reporting.
Overview
SKU Mapping — linking product identifiers across systems so advertising, inventory, sales, and profitability data can be analyzed together.
Organizations typically use a mix of identifiers: internal SKUs for operations, GTIN/UPC/EAN for retail scanning, marketplace IDs like ASIN for listings, and ad feed IDs for campaigns. Understanding the differences between those identifiers and how SKU Mapping relates to them prevents misattribution and reporting errors.
Key Identifier Types And Their Roles
- Internal SKU: Designed to reflect internal logic — variant, packaging, location — and used by WMS, ERP, and POS systems.
- GTIN / UPC / EAN: Global standardized codes used for universal item identification at retail and distribution points.
- ASIN / Marketplace ID: Marketplace-assigned identifiers that tie to the marketplace catalog and its rules.
- Ad Feed ID / Creative ID: Tracking constructs used by marketing platforms that may not correspond to physical units directly.
Why They Are Not Interchangeable
Each identifier exists for a different operational purpose. A GTIN represents a barcoded product at a packaging level, while an internal SKU might encode bin location and tiered pricing. An ASIN groups listings on Amazon that may map to multiple internal SKUs if the seller lists both single units and multipacks. Treating them as interchangeable leads to duplicated inventory counts, incorrect cost allocation, and broken ad attribution.
How SKU Mapping Bridges The Gap
SKU Mapping creates explicit relationships between these identifiers. The mapping can express that internal SKU 100-RED-1EA corresponds to GTIN 012345678905, maps to Amazon ASIN B07EXAMPLE, and is advertised under feed item 7890. This relationship resolves the question “which ad drove which SKU sale?” and allows financial systems to allocate cost-per-unit correctly when orders arrive from different channels.
Mapping Use Cases And Examples
Retail chain example: a private label cereal has GTIN for the retail box, but the distributor ships pallets with a different code for logistics. Mapping links pallet-level logistics codes to the retail GTIN and the retailer’s internal SKU used in POS so sales and shrinkage reconcile.
Marketplace example: a seller lists a product as a single unit and as a 3-pack on a marketplace. The marketplace assigns one ASIN to the single and a different ASIN to the bundle. Mapping indicates that internal SKU SK-001-EA maps to ASIN X and SK-001-3PK maps to ASIN Y and defines how unit economics roll up from bundle to single-unit level.
Rules For Robust Mappings
- Canonical Key: Choose a canonical identifier (often internal SKU or GTIN) to anchor lookups and joins.
- Versioning: Record effective dates so historical analytics use the mapping valid at the transaction date.
- Unit Conversion Attributes: Store UOM and conversion factors where bundles and multipacks are present.
- Provenance: Track source system and confidence score for automated vs manual mappings.
When Mapping Cannot Replace Proper Identifier Use
SKU Mapping does not remove the need for accurate identifiers. If GTINs are missing or incorrectly applied, mapping becomes brittle. Investments in upstream data quality — correct GTINs, consistent internal SKU conventions, and supplier cooperation — reduce the time spent fixing mapping errors downstream.
In short, the SKU Mapping layer is what allows GTINs, UPCs, ASINs, and internal SKUs to work together so teams can report on advertising effectiveness, inventory health, and profitability with confidence.
