Storage-Based Billing Vs Unit- And SKU-Based Pricing
Storage-Based Billing
Definition
Charging according to inventory space or storage units occupied over a defined period.
Overview
Storage-Based Billing is Charging according to inventory space or storage units occupied over a defined period. Comparing it to unit-, SKU-, or transaction-based pricing highlights how different billing models shift cost risk between the warehouse and the shipper.
Pricing models drive behavior. Storage-based billing charges for footprint and time; unit- or SKU-based pricing charges for items handled or stored per SKU count (for example, per-item, per-pick, or per-SKU slot fees). Understanding trade-offs helps merchants choose the correct model for inventory velocity, SKU complexity, and working capital concerns.
How The Models Differ
Each model values a different resource. Storage billing returns space-related costs. Unit/SKU pricing returns handling and complexity costs. Hybrid approaches combine both to reflect real operational expense.
- Space Focus: Storage-based billing targets the physical footprint and time an inventory item occupies a location.
- Transaction Focus: Unit/SKU pricing targets labor and transaction costs—picking, packing, receiving, and returns per item or per SKU.
- Complexity Pricing: SKU-based fees may include extra charges for kitting, lot control, or temperature control linked to particular SKUs.
Pros And Cons Compared
Storage billing simplifies invoicing for long-term space usage and encourages high turnover. Unit-based pricing rewards dense, slow-moving inventories with fewer picks but can penalize high-volume, small-item businesses with many transactions. Each has predictable and unpredictable elements.
- Storage-Based Advantages: Predictable space costs, aligns with real-estate expense, easier to audit occupancy.
- Storage-Based Disadvantages: Can penalize slow movers; requires precise occupancy measurement and WMS accuracy.
- Unit/SKU Advantages: Links cost to activity—low-activity SKUs cost less; suits e-commerce with many small orders.
- Unit/SKU Disadvantages: Volatile for high-order-volume clients; can under-charge for space-intensive SKUs.
When Warehouses Prefer Each Model
Warehouses with significant fixed real-estate costs favor storage billing to ensure space is monetized. High-throughput facilities that incur high labor costs for picking often choose unit-based pricing. Many providers offer hybrids: base storage fee plus per-pick and value-added-service charges.
Cost Modeling Example
Compare two product types: bulk commodity packaged on pallets (low pick density) versus small consumer items in many SKUs (high pick density). For the palletized product, storage billing at $10 per pallet per month is straightforward and economical. For the high-SKU product, per-pick fees (e.g., $0.50 per pick) may better reflect true costs since labor dominates.
Negotiation And Contract Considerations
When negotiating, clarify measurement units, minimums, slot-reservation policies, and how mixed pallets are handled. Ask for examples so you can model expected monthly charges under both models. Include audit rights and sample reports to validate occupancy and pick counts.
- Define Units: Specify pallet dimensions, bin sizes, and whether multi-level racking is billed per level.
- Minimums & Caps: Negotiate lower minimums or caps for the first 6–12 months while you ramp inventory.
- Reporting: Require daily or weekly reports showing slot-days, picks, and value-added services billed.
In short, the Storage-Based Billing approach charges for occupied space and time, while unit- and SKU-based pricing charge for handling and complexity. Choose or negotiate a model based on your SKU velocity, density, and whether real-estate or labor costs dominate the provider's cost structure.
