  • Review major marketplaces and competitors: see how Amazon, Best Buy, Wayfair, and key niche retailers handle restocking, time windows, and category distinctions. Note whether they apply fees only to opened items or charge for returns generally.
  • Secret-shop the returns experience: simulate returns to learn about real costs (shipment, packaging, time). This reveals friction points and competitor leniency.
  • Survey customers and partners: ask what they consider fair and whether fees would influence purchase decisions or channel choice.
  • Analyze internal return data: calculate return rates and per-return costs by SKU/category, then compare to competitor practices to identify competitive advantage or gaps.

These are typical starting points; customize using your cost model and benchmarking:

  • Electronics: 15–25%. Fast depreciation, potential for damage once opened, and higher inspection/testing costs justify the upper range. Example: a smartphone may incur a 20% fee or a $50 minimum to cover testing and reset costs.
  • Furniture: 15–25% plus pickup fees for bulky items. Returns often require white-glove pickup and refurbishment; include logistics and restock labor when setting percentages.
  • Apparel: 10–15%. Lower handling costs but hygiene concerns and seasonal fashion risk may warrant moderate fees or stricter condition requirements (tags attached, unworn).
  • Consumables and perishables: Typically no restocking fee but often not returnable; if returns are allowed, strict conditions apply because of spoilage and safety rules.

  • Display fees prominently before purchase: on product pages, during checkout, and in confirmation emails.

Balance cost recovery with retention: excessive fees can erode trust and repeat business. Offer alternatives such as free exchanges, store credit with fee waivers, or extended return windows for high-value customers. Be mindful of local laws—some jurisdictions prohibit certain fees or require advance disclosure—so consult legal counsel to ensure compliance. Always exempt defective or mis-shipped items from restocking charges.
