Tissue wrapping is the practice of using thin, lightweight tissue paper to protect, separate, and present delicate items during packaging and handling. It provides a soft barrier that prevents scratches, reduces friction, and improves product appearance while remaining breathable and easy to fold or customize.

The performance and appearance of tissue paper are primarily governed by two technical specifications: GSM (grams per square meter), which indicates basis weight, and the manufacturing finish, most commonly Machine Finished (MF) or Machine Glazed (MG). These parameters directly influence how tissue behaves in handling, wrapping, printing, and presentation applications across retail, e-commerce fulfillment, and luxury packaging.


GSM explained

GSM measures the mass of one square meter of paper and is the industry standard for communicating basis weight. It is a reliable proxy for thickness, opacity, tensile strength, and hand-feel, though fiber composition and calendering also affect properties. Common commercial ranges and their typical uses are:

  • 10–14 GSM (Ultra-Light): Highly translucent and extremely lightweight. Ideal for interleaving delicate goods (e.g., silk, fine prints, jewelry) where minimal bulk and gentle separation are required to prevent abrasion and transfer of finishes.
  • 17–20 GSM (Standard Retail): The industry standard for high-volume 3PL fulfillment and general retail tissue paper. Balances opacity, fold crispness, and adequate tensile strength for wrapping, cushioning light-to-medium items, and creating tidy brand presentations.
  • 25–35 GSM (Premium/Specialty): Heavier and more opaque, this range supports deep-dyeing, metallic and specialty coatings, and offers greater tear resistance. Common for premium wrapping of footwear, accessories, or boxed goods where a luxurious unboxing experience is important.


Manufacturing finish: MF vs MG

Finish describes surface texture and sheen applied during or after forming. Two widespread finishes are:

  • MF (Machine Finished): Both sides have a matte, fibrous “papery” texture. MF tissue accepts certain water-based inks and dyes, but displays less sheen. It is often chosen by organic, minimalist, or sustainably positioned brands because of its understated appearance and tactile authenticity.
  • MG (Machine Glazed): One side is glossy and smooth (machine-glazed), while the other remains matte. The glossy side provides a premium, high-sheen surface suitable for high-quality printing, metallic inks, and logos. MG is widely used when brand visibility and luxe presentation are priorities.


How GSM and finish interact

GSM and finish should be specified together because they jointly determine functional and aesthetic outcomes. For example, a 20 GSM MG tissue will present stronger visual pop and printing contrast than a 20 GSM MF while maintaining similar foldability. Conversely, a 30 GSM MF will be more robust than a 20 GSM MG but will present a softer, less reflective look.


Selection criteria and practical guidance

When choosing GSM and finish, consider the following factors:

  • Product fragility and protection needs: Delicate textiles benefit from ultra-light GSM for separation, whereas items that require structural support or dust protection (e.g., shoes) do better with 25–35 GSM.
  • Brand presentation: Premium or gift brands often prefer higher GSM and MG finish for an upscale unboxing experience. Minimalist or eco-focused brands often opt for MF and lower GSM.
  • Printability: High-resolution, metallic, or full-color prints perform best on MG surfaces; MF accepts simple printing but with subdued color and less sharpness.
  • Fulfillment workflow: High-volume operations typically favor 17–20 GSM for cost and handling efficiency; heavier stocks increase package volume and shipping costs.
  • Cost and sustainability trade-offs: Higher GSM and specialty coatings increase material costs and potentially complicate recycling. Evaluate material life-cycle impacts if sustainability is a priority.


Testing and quality control

Specify acceptance criteria and test methods with suppliers to ensure consistency. Key tests include:

  • GSM verification: Standardized grammage testing using sample sizes per ISO/BIS methods to confirm basis weight.
  • Opacity and light transmission: Useful when translucency affects product visibility or perceived quality.
  • Tensile and tear strength: Ensure tissue can withstand automated folding and manual handling without tearing.
  • Print adhesion and colorfastness: For printed or dyed tissue, run adhesion and rubbing tests to prevent transfer to products.
  • Coating and finish uniformity: For MG or coated stocks, inspect gloss levels and surface defects across production lots.


Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Typical errors in specifying tissue performance include:

  • Underestimating protection needs: Choosing ultra-light tissue for items prone to creasing or scuffing can result in product damage; match GSM to product fragility.
  • Over-specifying for aesthetics: Selecting high GSM and specialty coatings for basic retail lines increases cost and shipping weight unnecessarily.
  • Mismatching finish and printing requirements: Attempting high-fidelity prints on MF stock leads to muted colors and poor definition; use MG or coated papers for complex graphics.
  • Ignoring supply variability: Not setting tolerances for GSM and gloss can cause lot-to-lot inconsistencies; incorporate QC sampling in supplier agreements.


Sustainability and end-of-life considerations

GSM and finish choices affect recyclability and compostability. Plain uncoated MF tissue typically has fewer contaminants and is easier to recycle or compost. MG and specialty coatings, metallic inks, and heavy dyeing can complicate recycling streams or require specialized disposal. When sustainability is a priority, specify FSC or PEFC certification, water-based inks, and avoid metallic coatings where possible.


Procurement and specification checklist

When ordering, include clear specifications to avoid ambiguity:

  • Target GSM with tolerances (e.g., 20 GSM ± 1 GSM)
  • Finish type: MF or MG; specify which side is glazed for MG
  • Print/ink compatibility and color codes (Pantone references if needed)
  • Coating details (if any) and gloss level targets
  • Physical tests required: tensile, tear, opacity
  • Packaging, roll width or sheet size, and roll core type for automation
  • Certifications: recycled content, FSC/PEFC, compostability
