Tube

Definition

A collapsible or rigid container used for creams, gels, ointments, adhesives, toothpaste, and cosmetics.

Overview

Tube A collapsible or rigid container used for creams, gels, ointments, adhesives, toothpaste, and cosmetics. For legal-market access in the United States and acceptable shelf performance, tube material choice must align with product chemistry, packaging safety standards and regulatory labeling and sealing requirements.

Producers of cosmetic, over-the-counter (OTC) drug or medical ointments must evaluate extractables and leachables, barrier performance and the interaction of active ingredients with tube materials and liners. Regulatory expectations differ by product classification: cosmetics focus on safety and labeling, while pharmaceuticals and OTC drugs face stricter container-closure system qualifications and potentially child-resistant or tamper-evident features.

Regulatory Framework In The United States

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) governs cosmetics and drugs under different statutes. Cosmetic containers must not contaminate the product and labeling must not be misleading. For drugs and biologics, the FDA expects validated container-closure systems and may require sterilization or specific tamper-evidence measures. Manufacturers commonly reference FDA guidance documents, USP general chapters (for extractables and leachables testing), and industry standards when qualifying tube packaging.

Material Safety And Testing

  • Compatibility Testing: Stress-test the formulation in contact with candidate tube materials at elevated temperatures to detect interactions.
  • Extractables and Leachables: Conduct solvent extraction and analytical profiling to identify potential migrants from adhesives, inks or liners.
  • Barrier Performance: Measure oxygen and moisture transmission rates when shelf-life or oxidation is a concern.
  • Stability Studies: Include packaged stability testing to observe color, odor or potency changes over time under ICH-relevant conditions.

Labeling, Tamper Evidence And Child-Resistance

Tubes used for OTC drugs or certain cosmetics may require tamper-evident features such as induction seals, shrink bands or sealed crimp ends. Child-resistant packaging rules apply to specified drug categories; if required, the tube assembly must incorporate compliant closures or overpacks. Accurate dual-language or ingredient labeling must be applied to the tube surface or an overlabel, and GS1 or barcoding standards are typically used for supply chain traceability.

Recycling, End-Of-Life And Material Selection

Environmental assessments increasingly influence material choices. Mono-material plastic tubes (e.g., HDPE) simplify recycling compared to multi-layer laminates. Aluminum tubes are highly recyclable where metal recycling is established, but internal lacquers and mixed components can hinder processing. Manufacturers should consult local recycling infrastructure and consider design-for-recycling (mono-material caps and bodies) or refill systems where feasible.

Practical Example: Selecting A Tube For An OTC Ointment

For an OTC topical ointment containing active ingredients sensitive to oxidation, select a tube with a high-barrier layer (metalized laminate or EVOH co-extrusion). Validate compatibility through extractables and leachables testing (USP guidance), design a tamper-evident induction seal for first use, and ensure labeling meets OTC drug facts requirements per FDA. Coordinate with your contract packer to confirm available filling equipment for the chosen tube format and run accelerated stability tests on filled samples before market release.

In short, the Tube selected for cosmetics or pharmaceuticals must be qualified through compatibility testing, meet applicable U.S. regulatory and labeling requirements, and align with supply chain and sustainability goals to ensure product safety and market acceptance.
