Wave Picking


A WMS picking method that releases groups of orders together based on time, carrier, zone, route, or priority. Wave rules are often built around carrier cutoffs and route schedules to ensure batches of orders are ready for specific truck departures.


Wave picking and carrier scheduling are tightly linked in fulfillment operations. If your facility ships on multiple carrier schedules or sends consolidated routes to customers, waves provide the control to consistently meet those windows. This article explains how to design waves around cutoffs, coordinate staging, and use WMS features to automate routine decisions.


Designing Waves Around Carrier Cutoffs


Start by mapping carrier schedules and internal cycle times:

  • Carrier Cutoff Time: The latest timestamp when a shipment must be handed to the carrier (or tendered) to catch a departure.
  • Pick-To-Pack Cycle: The average time from pick start to completed, packed order.
  • Packing-to-Load Delay: Time needed to inspect, stage, and load into trailers.


Work backwards from the carrier cutoff to set your wave start times. For example, if Carrier X departs at 16:00, and your pick-to-load lead time is 90 minutes, schedule the wave to start around 14:15–14:30 so you have buffer for exceptions.


Coordinating Staging And Dock Space


Waves must align with physical constraints at the dock and staging areas. Reserve staging lanes per carrier and reserve sufficient pallet positions to avoid last-minute shunting. For carriers with variable volumes, use flexible staging zones that can be temporarily expanded.


  • Staging Buffer: Keep a time-buffer between wave completion and carrier arrival to absorb delays.
  • Dock Assignment: Pre-assign docks to carriers or wave types to speed trailer allocation and reduce trailer swap time.
  • Trailer Sequencing: Sequence trailers so high-priority waves are loaded first and meet the earliest cutoffs.


WMS Capabilities To Leverage


Use these WMS features when building carrier-centric waves:

  • Auto-Build Wave Rules: Create templates that auto-select orders by carrier, service level, and route to reduce manual planning.
  • Cutoff-Based Triggers: Configure waves to auto-release based on time thresholds or order volume thresholds relative to cutoff times.
  • Resource Reservations: Reserve pickers, pack stations, and staging locations as part of the wave build.
  • Real-Time Replanning: Allow the system to rebalance waves if orders are cancelled, added, or delayed so carrier commitments remain achievable.


Operational Rules And Exceptions


Define clear exceptions to avoid last-minute chaos:

  • Missed Cutoffs: A re-route or expedited shipping rule to handle orders that miss the wave.
  • Overfilled Waves: Rules to push lower-priority orders to the next wave or to a secondary carrier.
  • Expedited Orders: A priority lane that can be injected mid-wave without disrupting the scheduled carrier handoff.


Practical Example


A 3PL handles both parcel and LTL carriers. Parcel carriers have multiple daily cutoffs; LTL consolidations happen twice daily. The WMS runs short parcel waves every two hours and larger LTL waves mid-morning and late afternoon. The WMS auto-assigns packing lanes and staging by carrier. If parcel volumes spike unexpectedly, the system rebalances and pushes some low-priority parcels to the next wave or to an alternate carrier to safeguard the LTL consolidation schedule.


Monitoring And Continuous Improvement


Track these KPIs to refine wave scheduling:

  • On-Time Departure Rate: Percent of waves loaded and departed by carrier cutoff.
  • Wave Fill Efficiency: Percentage of planned capacity used per wave for pack and staging.
  • Rework And Expedited Rate: Orders requiring special handling due to missed waves or late arrivals.


In short, the Wave Picking method should be planned around carrier cutoffs and route schedules when those external schedules define your outbound rhythm. Proper WMS rules, reserved staging, and contingency policies make waves reliable tools for meeting carrier commitments with predictable resource usage.
