Overview

Corner Boards are rigid edge protectors used to stabilize and protect cartons on a pallet. They are L-shaped or U-shaped strips placed on the outside corners of stacked cartons or layered products to distribute strap tension, prevent crushing, and protect edges during handling and transport.


Corner boards are a simple component of pallet unitization but have an outsized effect on load integrity, especially for tall stacks, mixed-SKU pallets, or fragile packaging. Warehouses, 3PLs, and shippers use them to reduce punctures and corner damage that often occur during forklift handling, truck vibration, or container stacking. They are compatible with stretch wrap, strapping, and adhesive solutions.


What The Product Covers

Corner boards primarily protect the outside vertical edges of cartons and products where straps or load pressure concentrate. Their protection covers the physical corner from compression, abrasion, and edge crushing. They also provide a backing for a strap to bite against, which helps keep straps aligned and reduces slippage under tension. For thin-walled cartons or corrugated layers, the board acts as a sacrificial element that takes damage instead of the goods.

Damage to carton corners is a frequent source of customer rejections, returns, and claims. Using corner boards reduces point load failures and improves the effective compression strength of palletized stacks. This lowers rework and repacking time in the warehouse and reduces claims costs for carriers and shippers. Common Materials And Profiles

Corner boards come in a handful of material types and cross-sections tailored to different use cases:


  • Corrugated Cardboard: Lightweight and recyclable; good for short-term protection and light to medium loads.
  • Solid Fiberboard: Heavier-duty paperboard with higher compressive strength for medium to heavy cartons.
  • Plastic (PVC/HDPE): Durable, water-resistant, and reusable; suits moisture-prone environments or repeat shipping cycles.
  • Wooden Angle Boards: Strong and rigid for very heavy loads or chipsensitive products, though heavier and less recyclable.


How They Vary

Size, thickness, and length are the main variables. Typical leg lengths range from 20 mm (¾ inch) to over 150 mm (6 inches) depending on carton edge height. Thickness (caliper) affects both compressive strength and weight: thicker boards resist higher strap tension and edge compression. Some boards include perforations for easier tearing, pre-scored bends for nested stacking, or adhesive backing for temporary placement. Plastic boards often feature UV resistance and rounded edges to avoid cutting straps.


Who Uses Corner Boards

Manufacturers, distributors, and 3PLs commonly use corner boards as a routine part of palletization. Food, beverage, consumer packaged goods, electronics, and cosmetic sectors find them useful for fragile packaging. Carriers and freight forwarders expect stabilized loads that resist shifting; using corner boards reduces claims and improves carrier acceptance for stacked loads in intermodal containers. Warehouses handling returns or consolidated multi-sku pallets use a combination of boards and stretch wrap to meet customer presentation standards.


Practical Example

A beverage distributor pallets twelve cases high on a standard 48x40 pallet. Without corner boards, strap tension from two steel straps crushed the top layer corners and caused several bottles to leak during cross-country transit. After switching to 90 mm solid fiber corner boards under each strap and adding edge-aligned plastic corner caps at the highest-risk points, corner failures dropped by 85% on subsequent shipments. The carrier noted fewer claims and faster load acceptance at the depot.


Selection And Handling Tips

  • Match Size To Load: Choose leg length equal to or slightly taller than the carton edge being protected so the board covers the full vertical span under the strap.
  • Match Strength To Tension: Heavier straps and higher tension require thicker or denser boards—plastic or solid fiber for heavy-duty use.
  • Combine Methods: Pair corner boards with stretch wrap and a single or double strap pattern to control both lateral and vertical movement.
  • Storage: Keep cardboard corner boards dry and flat to avoid warping; plastic boards can be nested to save space.
  • Recycling: Corrugated and solid fiber boards are broadly recyclable; separate from plastic and wood for proper handling.
