Burden Carrier A small industrial vehicle used to transport tools, parts, supplies, or personnel around a large warehouse or campus. Burden carriers are designed to move modest loads across short to medium distances inside facilities or between closely located buildings, reducing manual handling, speeding replenishment, and keeping production or maintenance teams mobile.


Unlike forklifts or heavy lift equipment, burden carriers focus on frequent, low-to-medium-capacity trips and may be powered by batteries, propane, or electricity. They range from simple push-carts or motorized tugs to platform vehicles with seating for personnel. Their form factor is driven by the stop-and-go patterns of tasks such as line-side replenishment, tool crib deliveries, kitting, and campus transfers where agility and operator access matter more than lift height or large payload capacity.

Manufacturers produce several burden carrier variants to match facility workflows:

A platform cart that carries 500 lb of totes is suitable for a simple parts loop, while a personnel carrier may be sized for five people and include lighting and seat belts for safety. Automated burden carriers add navigation sensors, fleet management compatibility, and charging profiles that tie into a facility's energy management.

Typical buyers are warehouse managers, manufacturing operations, and 3PLs seeking to improve internal logistics or reduce labor costs. Capital budgets normally cover purchase or lease; service contracts and battery replacement are recurring operational expenses. In many facilities a cross-functional team of operations, safety, and maintenance evaluates requirement and ROI before procurement.

A mid-sized electronics manufacturer runs a two-shift assembly line that requires kits of components every 20 minutes. Walking delivery was creating a 5–7 minute delay per delivery.
