CP7 pallet

Definition

A CP-standard wood chemical pallet measuring 1300 x 1100 mm, used as a chemical pallet used for larger industrial loads and containerized chemical products.

Overview

CP7 pallet A CP-standard wood chemical pallet measuring 1300 x 1100 mm, used as a chemical pallet used for larger industrial loads and containerized chemical products.

The CP7 pallet is a heavy-duty wooden pallet built to a CP-series footprint (1300 mm x 1100 mm) and intended for industrial chemical shipments and larger unit loads. Its footprint is wider and deeper than many retail-focused pallets, which makes it a common choice for drums, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) on wooden supports, and dense bundles that will be containerized for export or stored in industrial yards. Construction is typically robust: hardwood or softwood stringers/blocks, reinforced deck boards, and fasteners sized for repetitive lift-and-stow cycles.

Why The CP7 Footprint Exists

Manufacturers and chemical shippers adopt the 1300 x 1100 mm CP7 size to better fit specific load geometries and maximize space in certain containers or trailers. The larger footprint helps stabilize long drums, palletized IBCs set close together, and irregularly shaped chemical packages that would otherwise overhang a smaller pallet. The CP7 is not a universal standard like ISO pallet sizes, but in regions and industries where it is common, it reduces load shifting and improves stacking density for chemical product flows.

Construction And Variants

CP7 pallets are primarily wood (solid-sawn or engineered), but construction varies by intended duty:

  • Deck Type: Top deck typically uses full-width boards to support drums and IBC skirts; some designs use spaced boards for drainage and easier cleaning.
  • Support Style: Four-way entry via notched stringers or three-block designs are both used; four-way makes forklift handling faster in mixed operations.
  • Treatment: Wood pallets destined for international shipment must meet ISPM 15 treatment or equivalent phytosanitary measures; chemical users may require additional surface sealing or coating to resist spills.

How The CP7 Performs With Chemical Loads

For chemical pallets the three performance priorities are load stability, spill containment, and compatibility with handling equipment. The CP7’s larger footprint improves lateral stability for tall drums and multi-IBC arrangements. To manage spills, shippers commonly pair the pallet with secondary containment (drip trays or pallet collars) or select deck patterns that allow quick containment placement. Also important: fastener selection and board thickness must withstand concentrated point loads from drum rims and IBC feet.

Compatibility With Containers And Trailers

Dimensionally a CP7 pallet optimizes certain containerization patterns but may reduce pallet count per 20' or 40' container compared with narrower pallets. Warehouse planners should confirm the pallet pattern when planning container loads and when using automated pallet-handling lanes or racking systems:

  • Container Fill: CP7 pallets often require a custom loading plan for containerized loads because the 1300 mm width does not align with ISO container internal widths as neatly as 1200 mm or 800 mm pallet standards.
  • Racking: Ensure selective rack beam spacing and pallet supports match the wider 1100 mm depth. Narrower beam systems will not accept the CP7 footprint without modification.

Regulatory And Safety Considerations

Because CP7 pallets are frequently used for hazardous or regulated chemicals, several rules apply. Wood pallets exported internationally must comply with phytosanitary rules (for example, ISPM 15 heat treatment and marking). Chemical shipments must meet relevant hazardous materials shipping regulations (packaging, labeling, and securing). Forklift operators should be trained for the higher center-of-gravity loads that often ride on CP7 pallets to prevent tip and drop incidents.

Typical Buyers And Applications

Common users of CP7 pallets include chemical manufacturers, repackagers, distributors of industrial fluids, and 3PLs supporting chemical container loading. Typical applications:

  • Bulk Drum Shipments: Rows of 200–220 L drums stabilized for road or ocean transport.
  • IBC Support: Wooden skids under steel-caged IBCs when pallet-type IBCs aren’t used.
  • Containerized Loads: Dense, heavy-pack shipments where pallet footings and decking protect goods during long-haul ocean transport.

Practical Example

A chemical distributor sets nine 200 L drums per CP7 pallet in a 3x3 arrangement. The distributor chooses a full-board top deck and reinforced stringers to manage rim loads. For export, the pallets are heat-treated and stamped to meet phytosanitary requirements, banded to the drums to prevent shifting, and combined with a plastic drip tray to capture any leakage during transit.

Tips For Warehouse Managers

  • Inspect Regularly: Check deck boards and fasteners where drum rims contact the pallet; replace boards with cracking or severe wear.
  • Check Fit Before Container Loading: Build a test load in yard space to confirm container density and lashing points.
  • Train Handlers: Emphasize safe lift heights and securement when stacking high-center-of-gravity chemical loads on CP7 pallets.

In short, the CP7 pallet is a purpose-built 1300 x 1100 mm wood chemical pallet chosen for its stability with larger industrial chemical loads and its suitability for containerized shipments; correctly specified construction, regulatory compliance, and handling procedures determine how well it performs in a given operation.
